This gaming computer was built from a plethora of used and repurposed parts. I found an old computer someone was giving away on craigslist and spruced it up with some LED lights and a more powerful CPU. It doesn't run everything on high settings, but it certainly gets the job done for a little Minecraft or Fortnite.$155.39 -

It started with my acquisition of an old office pc at an affordable price, kickstarting my interests in pc building. The Dell Optiplex 9020 comes with a solid processor that is still viable in this day. The Intel Core i7-4790 was a beast during its time and still manages to keep up with the latest games of today. Next, I increased my RAM to 16GB of DDR3 which is what I had lying around from other computers that were not in use. Right after, I installed a 2 TB Seagate HDD that i got from Microcenter. Finally, I installed an Asus 1050ti into the pc that allowed me to transform this computer from an office pc into a true gaming pc. Luckily, this model of gpu does not require any additional power so it can run completely off the motherboard and the the 290 Watt PSU. While this pc isn't much compared to the Titans of today, my plan is to slowly improve this pc as parts come on sale and I find great deals. My next plans are to upgrade the PSU, GPU, and transplant this PC into a new case. Additionally, I plan to improve the cooling and both the motherboard and processor. I really look forward to overclocking my little Frankestein one day. All of this will depend on my luck with deals which adds to the fun because there's no way I know what I'll end up with in the future!$254.98 -

Once I outgrew it and upgraded parts, my wife (girlfriend at the time) wanted a desktop to type her college papers on, and do light gaming, such as The Sims 3. She got my GTX 1060 when I upgraded that, a new SSD, and a new PSU, but everything else is my original parts! I do not remember what I paid for any of these items, as I bought them at local gaming stores and not an online retailer$264.96 -

I'm a graduate student studying cybersecurity, and built this computer specifically with Ubuntu compatibility in mind. I use it to work on my projects, which included the use of perf-intel-pt, ptrace and simple tests with multi-party communication. For the time being, I opted to use integrated graphics as it is sufficient for my workflow, but I eventually intend to add a GPU for my own personal use. The i3-10100 is surprisingly quick with 4c/8t and a maximum clock speed of 4.3GHz - I was very happy with it and it has given me little to no notable slowdowns in my current workflow. I might at some point upgrade to a higher model, especially as I expend my workflow, on but I definitely don't feel like I have to as it stands - a Core i3 is definitely more worthy of consideration than it might seem. Of course, based on what you're using it for your mileage will vary. I use another another computer along with this one in my day-to-day work, so I connected a USB switch that moves the mouse and keyboard between machines so I can quickly switch. This works nicely with a monitor that supports Picture-by-Picture (PBP). I was impressed to see how well Ubuntu scales between sudden changes of resolution as I toggle between full-screen and PBP depending on the current use-case. Certainly you can use higher specs if need be, but if you're fine with a quad core and don't do anything graphics-heavy like with me, a list like this represents a great price-to-performance value while still getting quality components and strong reliability. As a whole, I've been very happy with this machine and highly recommend a project like this if it interests you.$539.93 -

I think AMD had a promotion and it came with BF4 for free and it was so amazing. Nice graphics and good fps, I never experienced something like this. I used to game on a laptop before this, so it was huge step. I later explored more games before being addicted to league of legends, and it slowly became a league of legends gaming PC. I usually play some VR titles, Rocket League, Destiny 2, Risk of Rain 2, No Man's Sky. The process was pretty simple. Installed CPU and heatsink into the Mother Board, as well as the ram, then set it down into the case. Bolted everything down then installed all of the other parts. The strip of lights in the case was from a bulk roll of 5050 LEDs that I cut and soldered the connections on to it. One RGB header goes to the LED strip, and the second one goes to the fan controller included with the case so that ASUS Aura sync can control everything. I also run an Oculus Rift S off of this rig, and it's handled everything quite well. This build could benefit from a newer GPU. I'm looking to probably upgrade the CPU to a Ryzen 7 3700x when the 4000 series hits stores and pushes the price down on the 3000s. I chose the AverMedia capture card over the usual ElGato. The AverMedia was on sale, so I got it for a steal, and it's extremely easy to use.$1,399.81 -
