HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact connection interface for audio/visual hardware. It transmits digital information in uncompressed format, which allows for high quality video and audio. Using a single cable, HDMI combines the video, audio, and control signals for devices, which reduces wiring clutter and confusion about the type of connection needed between components. HDMI transmits all ATSC HDTV standards, up to 8 channel 192kHz, uncompressed digital audio and all currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby Digital and DTS), as well as CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) signals. CEC allows HDMI devices to control each other when necessary as well as permitting the user to control multiple devices from the same remote control. HDMI is also compatible with the PC Standard DVI (Digital Visual Interface). This compatibility requires no signal conversion. There is no loss of video quality when using DVI to HDMI adapter.

The Type A connector is a 19-pin plug currently used in most HDMI-enabled products.
