SD Flash Memory Cards: Expand Your Storage in a Flash

SD Secure Digital memory cards are a go to storage option for anybody who needs to expand the data storage capacity on their digital camera, smartphone, laptop, or other device. These tiny cards are packed with solid state flash memory, the same memory technology that you will find on your phone or laptop’s internal storage.

Flash memory cards offer high speed performance and high capacity storage with excellent resistance to everyday bumps and drops. They are a standard tool of the trade for photographers, videographers, and other on the go creative professionals who need to quickly store HD video recordings and photos. They are, however, just as useful for storing movies, music, or whatever else you want to put on them.

Which Flash Memory Card Is Right for You

Form factor is the first big aspect to consider. An SD card can come in either the larger SD form factor or the smaller microSD memory card. Full size SD cards are still quite small, and you will see them used in many devices like cameras and laptops with expandable storage. MicroSD cards, on the other hand, get used in smartphones, action cameras, and other compact devices. A microSD card can also perform double duty as a full sized card when used with an adapter that lets it fit in a standard SD slot.

Card type refers to the basic format of the card and goes hand in hand with storage capacity. Today, there are two main card formats: Secure Digital High Capacity SDHC, with a maximum capacity of 32GB, and Secure Digital Extended Capacity SDXC, with a maximum capacity of 2TB. Both of these formats also have microSD versions, microSDHC and microSDXC, with the same storage capacities. Note that SDXC devices are backward compatible with SDHC, but SDHC devices generally cannot use SDXC cards.

Finally, there is speed class to consider. The original speed class rating refers to the minimum read speed and write speed of a flash card, and most cards today are Class 10, with a minimum of 10mb/s. There is also the newer Ultra High Speed class, devised for the needs of ultra HD cameras, which establishes the U1 (10mb/s) and U3 (30mb/s) classes. Most 4K UHD cameras require a U3 card. Finally, there is UHS bus speed, which measures the maximum speed at which the card can transmit data to another device. UHS-I has a maximum speed of 104mb/s, UHS-II offers up to 312mb/s, and the newest UHS-III can reach 624mb/s.
