The End is Coming for Windows 10: What You (Still) Need to Know

It’s a moment many have tried to ignore, but the end is closer than ever for Windows 10. That's especially important because more than half of PCs worldwide are still running that OS, despite a long-publicized end-of-service date of October 14, 2025.

We've discussed this looming deadline a few times before, but the clock is ticking for users to either upgrade their operating system or, if their current hardware doesn't meet the necessary specs, consider investing in a new machine.

For those holding out, there's a small silver lining. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which provides crucial security patches, is available to consumers, with a few asterisks.

Until October 13, 2026 -- one year after the official end-of-service date -- you can enroll in the consumer ESU program and receive critical security updates (but nothing else). The program is free for consumers who agree to sync and back up their Windows settings through Microsoft's OneDrive service (or $30 per year if you choose not to).

That said, if your PC hasn't made the jump to Windows 11 by now, there's a good chance its hardware is simply too old to meet the stricter requirements. If that's the case, it might just be time for a new laptop.

Time for an Upgrade? Here Are a Few Recommendations

Navigating the crowded laptop market can be a challenge, but here are a few of my personal recommendations for different needs and budgets. 

The Microsoft Surface Laptop is a fantastic choice with the inherent advantage of having both its hardware and operating system designed by Microsoft. The latest models offer Qualcomm's Snapdragon X processors, which bring impressive battery life and enhanced on-device AI capabilities. Starting at around $800, I've always considered this line to be an excellent value.

Alternatively, you could make the switch to Apple's ecosystem with the M4 MacBook Air. It stands out as one of the most universally useful laptops you can buy, especially with a starting price under $1,000. It's a powerhouse for productivity and creative tasks (though not the ideal choice for gamers).

For a budget-friendly option, one of my go-to recommendations is the Lenovo IdeaPad. You can often find these models in the $600 to $800 range, equipped with processors from Intel, AMD, or Snapdragon. Some even feature a 360-degree hybrid hinge, allowing them to double as a tablet.
