Amid the excitement of CES 2024, NVIDIA made a series of announcements including new GPU products and its continued commitment to AI. First are its three new GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series GPUs, each featuring enhanced AI capabilities and optimized performance compared to the original RTX 40 Series which launched in October, 2022.
Other announcements include the introduction of several new G-Sync monitors, more AI tools for content creators, technology that makes game dialogue and NPC interactions more engaging, and new laptops and desktops using the latest NVIDIA hardware. Plus, a new version of the near 20-year-old Half Life 2, now enhanced with Ray Tracing.
GeForce RTX 40 SUPER Series Launching This Month
The most notable of Nvidia's announcements was its new graphics cards. The last significant NVIDIA GPU launch was the RTX 40 series in late 2022, led by the high-end 4090 GTX.
The forthcoming RTX 4080 Super is claimed by NVIDIA to be "1.4 times faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti without DLSS Frame Generation'' in demanding games. Priced from $999 and launching on January 31, we'll have to wait and see what its real-world performance actually looks like. The new series also includes the 4070 Super, releasing on January 17 starting at $599, and the 4070 Ti Super, available on January 24 starting at $799.
New monitors and laptops
In partnership with OEMs like Asus, Alienware, and Philips, NVIDIA announced 24 new partner gaming monitors. Notably, the Alienware AW3225QF, which is claimed to be the world's first 240Hz 4K OLED gaming monitor.
Continuing its partnerships, NVIDIA has collaborated with laptop OEMs, including Acer and ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo among others to ship new laptops using its RTX GPU. All RTX GPUs since the RTX 20 series offer enhanced AI performance thanks to the hardware's Tensor cores, which are designed to accelerate AI computations. NVIDIA now says that its TensorRT-LLM, which is an open source library designed to enhance and optimize the performance of Large Language Models (LLM), has recently been updated for better AI calculation performance on PCs running its hardware.
More AI Tools for Users and Content Creators
NVIDIA's focus on AI was evident in their announcements. NVIDIA showcased the possibilities of AI in gaming with its Avatar Cloud Engine, or ACE. The demo featured a game where players interact with AI-controlled characters, who respond in a spontaneous and unscripted manner. While exciting, the technology's true impact on gameplay is best understood through hands-on experience. The demo is available on YouTube.
For writers and other content creators, NVIDIA announced a partnership with Getty Images to deliver Generative AI by iStock, a tool for creating digital assets trained on Getty Images stock photos.
Lastly, NVIDIA announced that new games like Diablo 4, Horizon Forbidden West, and a ray-traced update to the classic Half Life 2 will all leverage the Ray Tracing and DLSS upsampling capabilities of its RTX cards.
