Micro Center Champions Recommend: Power Supplies
Intro and PowerSpec 850 by @tbarggs
The power supply, or PSU, is one of the most important parts of a PC build. This component alone determines whether everything will be supplied with enough power to run or not. So, you always want to make sure you have a quality power supply. Our Micro Center champions have put together a list of some of their favorite power supplies, so you know these come highly recommended.
(we won’t be going in-depth explaining power supplies in this article – check out our FAQ and explainer if you want to learn more about power supplies!)
PowerSpec 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Fully Modular Power Supply
The PowerSpec 850 is fully modular. This means that routing your cables, and overall cable management in general, will be a lot easier and less of a headache. It also means that you can insert the power supply brick first and then do the wires after as needed which gives a much cleaner look to the overall build. This power supply is meant for an ATX case so it will fit into most standard-sized cases, but it’s always worth double-checking measurements before purchasing!
Overall, I always recommend this power supply to anyone looking to get a quality power supply for a great price!
Corsair RM750 750 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Fully Modular Power Supply - White
As a 750 Watt power supply, the RM750 isn’t going to be powering the beefiest machines, but it’s more than capable of handling entry-to-mid-level PCs with ease while still leaving a bit of headroom for upgrades. Plus, being 80+ Gold, it's going to be incredibly efficient, saving you money on your electric bill (over similar PSUs) and helping protect your computer from surges and other electrical damages.
ASUS Republic of Gamers Thor 850W 80+ Platinum ATX Fully Modular Power Supply by @Lambdaben
EVGA GQ 1000 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Semi-Modular Power Supply
The GQ 1000 watt is 80+ Gold Certified, an important benchmark for any computer that needs this much power, but it also comes with a number of extra features, like EVGA ECO fan mode, making this monster of a PSU run nearly silently. It’s also semi-modular, so while it won’t have the full freedom of a modular PSU, the attached cables can do a lot to help reduce cable confusion for first-time builders. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or you’ve never built a computer before, the EVGA GQ will work perfectly for your new PC!
