AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Build Guide: Big Red
The world’s most powerful gaming processor deserves a powerful build, right?PC Build Guides
The new kind of gaming has arrived; the AMD Ryzen 9 9800X3D is available now. Making use of Zen 5 architecture and 2nd generation 3D V-Cache technology (you can find out more about those over here), the 9800X3D may just be the world’s most powerful gaming processor. So, obviously, we had to put together a killer gaming build with it. We’ve got the parts list right below, but be sure to stay to the end of the article to watch us put the build together.
The Build:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
The centerpiece of the build and AMD’s latest gaming champion, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a blazing fast CPU with some gaming-specific enhancements. AMD’s second generation V-Cache technology allows for even faster on-chip quick-access storage to help your games run faster and smoother than ever before. Want to know more? Check out the video below or our breakdown article over here.
CPU Cooler: NZXT Elite RGB 360MM Cooling Kit
A CPU with that much power behind it deserves a cooler that’s just as powerful. The Elite from NZXT is that cooler. An AIO with a 360MM radiator, the Elite has more than enough cooling power to keep temps down. Plus, it comes with a stunning LCD display that can show your temps, a custom GIF, or even full-length YouTube videos for even more customization options.
Motherboard: ASUS X870E-E ROG Strix Gaming WiFi AMD AM5 ATX Motherboard
ASUS’s X870E-E is a perfect meeting of form and function. Specifically designed for AMD 9000 Series chips, the X870E-E includes PCIe 5.0 support, DDR5 support, on-board WiFi 7, and an easy-to-build-with design. It also features customizable RGB and a sleek, stunning black finish.
RAM: Crucial Pro 48GB (2 x 24GB) DDR5-5600 PC5-44800 CL46 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit
DOn’t let RAM be the bottleneck in your build. 48GB of DDR5-5600 RAM from Crucial is lightning-fast RAM with an overhead, just in case games continue to get more power hungry (and they will!). The best part is that it’s all crammed into just two sticks, so if you find yourself need more RAM, you can easily add a second set and double your capacity.
Video Card: XFX AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Mercury Magnetic Air Overclocked Triple Fan 24GB GDDR6 PCIe 4.0 Graphics Card
The RX 7900 XTX is the absolute pinnacle of graphics cards from AMD this generation. With AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture and 24GB of RAM, there is nothing currently out that it cannot run. Blaze through the streets of Cyberpunk 2077 with maxed out settings or dominate your Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 lobbies with enough power left over to stream the whole thing.
Storage: Samsung 990 PRO 2TB Samsung V NAND 3-bit MLC PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe M.2 Internal SSD
We used to say that you need an SSD for your boot drive, but now it’s time to bump that statement up: you need an SSD. Games like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart require them and even games that don’t have to have an SSD benefit from them, with quicker boot and load times. Never make your friends wait for your game to boot again!
PSU: ASUS ROG Strix Gold Aura Edition 1000 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Fully Modular Power Supply
A modular power supply is a must-have for a high end build like this. While being a 1000 watt, 80 Watt Plus rated PSU is arguably the more important part, the modularity means that you won’t have excess cables clogging up your new powerhouse build. Nothing ruins an aesthetic more than a random, dangling MOLEX cable.
Case: Phanteks NV9 MKII Tempered Glass eATX Full Tower Computer Case
Phanteks cases are a new arrival at Micro Center after we saw how much the fans wanted them. Now, having built a PC in a Phanteks NV9 MKII case, I can see why. The case proper offers tons of open air, allowing your build to shine through gorgeously. On the back side, all of your cables can be run through distinct cables, making cable management a breeze. The NV9 MK II is stunning, and absolutely worthy of our first 7900X3D build.
