I've always wanted to have a NAS and a plex server and I deciced to go the DIY route. This will be my first foray into both and I also plan on using it as a playground to learn about virtual machines and more. The current plan is to install unraid and add plex as an app then in the future I'll mess with things such as a minecraft server or home camera system. The chassis is rack mountable and is made by a company called myelectronics based in europe.$553.95 -

This was built using spare parts I had lying around after getting a good deal on 96 TB of used hard drives. The only new part in this build was the 5600G I got at microcenter. Currently the server is running openmediavualt on a 500 GB sata m.2 and its used as a cloud storage server and hosting other services such as Minecraft servers. There are 8 8TB Seagate drives running in raid 10 connected to a LSI 9207 storage controller (that has a fan tied to it lol) and 2 14TB Seagate drives.$108.99 -

This is a home NAS system running TrueNAS 13 (at the time of building), plus a modded Minecraft server inside a Virtual Machine and a Plex Media server running inside a BSD Jail. I picked the case for the hot-swappable drive bays and wasn't disappointed, they work perfectly as advertised and I should be able to expand it going forward if needed. The additional fans are quiet and keep everything well managed. Although it's worth noting that the case includes its own fan that is connected to the drive bays by a 2pin fan header, meaning it will always run at maximum RPM, and is quite loud. Bafflingly, the fan is actually a 4-pin PWM fan, and I would highly recommend connecting it to the motherboard via a Y-splitter to other case fans, rather than using the case header. Also, being a reasonably cheap case for the feature-set, it does not feature folded metal edges, the metal panels have very sharp internal edges and I did actually slash my finger quite badly installing one of the fans. But aside from that everything went relatively smoothly and I'm very happy with the performance so far.$973.77 -

This is my main media server machine, as can likely be guessed from the amount of HDDs in the case. It streams my content to any of my other devices like TVs, tablets, and phones. It also doubles as a Minecraft server sometimes, since the i5-11400 has more than enough power to do both at the same time.$1,273.55 -

Went with Asus TUF motherboard (versus cheapest B660 Microcenter sold) to in theory get better VRM for any future, higher core count, CPU upgrade. That said, at six cores the i5-12400 already has two more cores than the i7-3770k it replaced. Primary reason for upgrading was to have VT-d support for device passthrough to VMs.$764.96 -
