by Spyderdyne I Posted on: 3/30/2022Build Description
10X Random recycled HDDs a DJ friend was getting rid of/clearing out. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop w/ZFS Raidz, LZ4 block level compression, RAID 0 SSD L2 ARC and Logs caches. SuperMicro x10slh-n6-st031 Motherboard w/4x10GbE bonded network adapter, quad core 3.4Ghz Xeon, 32GB DDR3 1600Mhz, 128GB SSD RAID1 mirror for OS partitions. Over 28TB basic capacity w/RAIDz single drive fault tolerance. Each drive broken into a multiple of 1.35TB partition slices across 10 SATA 3 HDDS, with ZFS deduplication enabled and LZ4 compression, this NAS should be able to serve over 50TB of files for my studio before filling up.

This eliminates HDD seek times across the 10 spindles to a minimum for reads that aren't in cache already, and eliminates them for writes. Very fast...
