This build was originally built in late 2018 as a friend's first Gaming PC, paired with a 1080p 144Hz monitor. It was primarily used to play esports titles such as Overwatch and Valorant, as well as some triple-a shooters such as Borderlands 3. He has since moved on to a new upgrade with an i5-11600K and RTX 3070, but I wanted to repurpose his old build and see how it performs in 2023. I made this excellent PC on a budget for my wife during last thanksgiving. I made this on a barebone HP prebuilt shell that I bought online for just 55 USD. It came with gold-certified 450W PSU, case, compatible CPU cooler, and HP motherboard. I supplemented the rest with new parts from Microcenter. These include a 5600G CPU, 16GB (8x2) DDR4 3200 MHz Ram, Inland 256GB SSD, Acer 1080P monitor, Redragon keyboard an mice set. She is super happy as it is almost silent and gets all her job done (writing and light gaming).$226.97 -

He loves a lot of the "simulator" games for some reason and was complaining that the game Cooking Simulator wouldn't run at an acceptable level on an aging (~2017) laptop notebook with no discrete video card. So since it was around Christmas time, I decided for the "give a man to fish / teach a man to fish" approach. I pieced together a very modest collection of desktop components. Some of these were older, retired components such as a dated power supply and graphics card. Others were available to acquire at little expense at my local Microcenter. But the whole point of this process was to create an affordable, entry-level stepping stone for him. And also to have components that were fairly replaceable in value in the event something went wrong or accidents were made.$229.96 -

First ever build back in 2018, she’s a little dusty after being in storage during a couple deployments. Time to finally start upgrading! Currently got a deal on a 750w power supply and upgraded to at least 16G of RAM, 500gb SSD. Looking for new mobo and CPU and GPU to get her kind of current. I got the parts for this build relatively recently from eBay and friends that had old parts. This build isn't really great for gaming, but I use it for when friends come over and don't have a computer to use. There's no RAM in the picture because I'm currently using it on a different build, but there's usually 16 gb of T-Force Vulcan Z running at 3200mhz. The case is quite restricted as well when it comes to airflow as it was my old case from my first computer and isn't very good, which is why I gave it the name Zero Airflow Build.$283.98 -

It's in my ten year old Thermaltake mid tower case, now with a new power supply. I did this thing as cheap as I could. The $89 i3 quad core is faster then the 6 core AMD FX that won't run Win 11. I bought a returned Asus motherboard, that was complete except the M,2 screws, and it seems to work fine. Like my cpu, my old ASUS legacy bios board won't run Win 11 either. And, of course it used DDR3, so I had to get new ram. Then there was the MBR Hard Drive problem and the UEFI bios differences. Such as, the : You can't boot from a legacy MBR HD if you use on board graphics, and then if you can find someone that knows that your lucky! So, you can now boot your old HD in legacy mode but guess what, you won't have "Secure Boot" so no Win 11! Which is what this is all about. Now ask on line how to change your MBR HD to GPT and keep it bootable! 99% of the answers say, "No sweat, but you can't boot from that drive anymore! So, how you gunna get that Windows 11, since you don't have a activation key because your copy is "digital" and if it don't boot you ain't got anything. See how many answers you get to that question online. I'll save you the trouble, you have to pay $45 dollars for Aomei backerupper. Then you can get Win 11, and try to find all the stuff you use to use that they just moved around to make it feel different, and call Netflix to ask why you can't watch a movie, but spammers can still find you through all this TPM, secure boot, and all the new Win 11 security and safe web shite. IT'S A NEW DAY IN COMPUTING. HURRAY!!$285.93 -

After enjoying my Prometheus v3 build for a few months and seeing that the Ryzen 5 1600 was still on sale, I replaced the guts of an old Pentium 4 class machine with another build in December 2019. I use this machine to run virtual servers for my development purpose, and I stuck a graphics card in it this spring to also do Folding@Home. I know the 20 year old case desperately needs replaced, and the hard drives I use to store the virtual machines on are aging, but I like to get value out of the parts I buy so it was good enough at the time for a home server.$294.93 -

For much of the past decade, my parents have been running a Dell Optiplex that was old, noisy, and slow. Two years ago, I decided to put together a new system for them that would be simple, small, silent, and budget-friendly as a gift for the holidays. Enter the Inwin Chopin. At just $350 and 3.3 liters, they had a machine that could do anything they needed while remaining virtually invisible. Maintenance is incredibly easy as well - undo a single screw to remove the side panel, and dedust once a year with compressed air. They were thrilled with it, and I even had a few requests from family friends to build the same for them!$337.95 -

I'm calling this a postapocalyptic build simply because it is a desktop that survived the catastrophic failure of a power supply. Initially this build was done using a few older components along with inexpensive modern parts sourced from my local microcenter. Specifically, this was built with an aging power supply and graphics card. After some testing, I realized the the system had a catastrophic partially because it was being left on carpet. The inside of the chassis looked like the aftermath of a dust explosion. Ultimately I had to clean, rebuild, and replace the power supply and motherboard with brand new units. Thankfully the cpu and graphics card weren't damaged during the apocalypse.$339.94 -
