My daily PC, Bluejay, originally built in 2019 has gone through a lot of iterations. From a Ryzen 5 2600 and GTX 1070 to a 6850k and 6800XT, to now a Ryzen 7 7700X and 2080ti. This wonderful thing allows me to keep open 100 tabs without ever having to close any of them!

This was my first DIY build, and I went for a relatively middle of the road spec that's fairly well rounded and not optimized for any particular thing. CPU, RAM, and mobo were from a Micro Center bundle, while the other components were sourced wherever there were deals to be had. The only thing that is missing is a GPU, although the iGPU inside the 7700X has been sufficient in the meantime. The CPU undervolts easily, which allows it to draw only 65W compared to 144W previously and never getting hotter than 70C while only losing 10% performance. Meanwhile the iGPU overclocks pretty well, and was easily stable with a 500Mhz boost. The RAM ran on EXPO settings without any issues. I had originally planned for a 7900XTX and specced an 850W PSU, but my current plan now is to go with a lower end 7800XT or 4070 which has made the 850W a little overkill. In addition to a GPU, cooling will be upgraded with three more case fans, although for the current heat load the two fans are more than enough. The hard drive cage was removed to increase airflow for the expected 7900XTX, so the build uses SSDs only. Even with the change in plans, I'm not going to put the cage back in because it would involve unplugging and replugging the PSU, which is a bit of a pain to do. The room tends to be pretty dusty, and I have added a secondary filter to the front intake along with the built in filter from the case. One downside with this build is that the mobo's PCIe slot is one down, so it utilizes the second slot. However, the case only has room for four slots total, and therefore it limits the GPU to sub triple slot widths only. Coupled with the relatively short spacing available for length (306mm with front fan, 313mm with slim fan, 331mm without), it makes finding a suitably fitting GPU somewhat difficult with how big they have gotten. The front panel cable is also just long enough, but it's under a bit of tension so another inch would have helped greatly.

PURPOSE >> This computer was built for mainly general purpose use (i.e., emails, online meetings, presentations,... PURPOSE >> This computer was built for mainly general purpose use (i.e., emails, online meetings, presentations, Youtube, etc.) along with amateur graphic design + 3D modeling (i.e., Photoshop and eventually Blender with future plans to use with 3D printer) and light 1440p gaming (looking to get into Diablo 4 given Diablo2 nostalgia, NFS Unbound, maybe Starfield since it was included with CPU purchase, LoL, etc.) FORM & FUNCTION >> Foundational image of the build I had in mind was the mATX platform, making sure I wanted to avoid a full-tower and full-sized ATX motherboard (what was used in my last PC built back in 2007). I purchased the Antec NX200M case purely due to its design. From there, given the timely release of the most recent Ryzen 7000 series CPUs, I went with the energy-efficient yet still powerful Ryzen 7 7700 and associated ASRock B650M motherboard (which is mainly black with white accents). Given the relatively lower TDP, I went with a smaller dual-tower CPU cooler and purchased in white to accompany the motherboard accents and provide some contrast to the black internals of the case. From there, I made plans to eventually purchase a 7800XT GPU when released, and identified the ASRock Challenger as a perfect design fit for my system (to be purchased in the near future). An adequate PSU was purchased to accompany the 7800XT and overall power needs. RAM and storage were purchased with best affordable function in mind. After some consideration, I then built my own front cover to replace the Antec OEM plastic facade. Design mimics the Fractal North but utilizes my own desired wood stain/tone. TIMELINE//FUTURE PLANS >> Parts for this build were purchased over a period of 6-8 months, and this setup is still a work in progress, with future plans to purchase an AMD Radeon 7800XT and an extra 2TB NVME SSD. COMPREHENSIVE PARTS LIST >> --- Case: Antec NX200 M, Micro-ATX Tower --- Motherboard: ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi --- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8C/16T --- CPU Cooler: Thermalright Silver Soul 110 --- Memory: Team T-Force Vulcan 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 5600, CL 32 --- Storage: Solidigm P44 Pro, 1TB PCIe gen4 NVMe (Future: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB gen4 NVMe) --- GPU: CPU's integrated graphics for now (Future: AMD Radeon 7800XT, likely ASRock Challenger model) --- PSU: CORSAIR RM850e Fully Modular --- Fans: Iceberg Thermal IceGALE aRGB 140mm PWM x2 (Front intake) + ID-COOLING NO-12015-XT-ARGB slim PWM x1 (Rear exhaust) + Thermalright TL-C12015 slim PWM x1 (Rear/top exhaust) --- Front cover: Custom-made using Poplar, design inspired by Fractal North

Played on a gaming laptop until it broke, so I decided to build my own computer for school and game. Was originally going to get a 5600X3D bundle to save money. I figured that I should just spend a bit more money for the 7700x to have AM5 instead of AM4 for future proofing.

I used to game on my gtx 1650 laptop, but it was starting to show it's age. Instead of spending around $1000 on a new laptop, I thought I would build a PC for around the same price instead. Right now, I only have a couple games installed, which are Prey and Need for Speed Unbound. Prey is a well optimized game, but it runs on dx11, and arc was known for having issues with non dx12 titles when it came out. I know Intel has gone back and improved drivers for certain dx11 games, but when playing Prey at max settings at 2560x1440p, there would be times where my framerate would drop from 144 fps to around 70 fps. The GPU usage would drop to around 30% To solve this, I ended up using dxvk to make the game run on vulkan. Now it stays at 144 fps all the time, with some shader compilation stutters. Using dxvk in dx11 and dx9 titles to make the game run in vulkan has a good chance of boosting performance with arc cards. To use dxvk, you just need to paste at most two folders into the game's exe directory. There are videos on YouTube that show how to do this. The only downside is that you can't do this in online games that use anti cheat. With need for speed, the game ran well out of the box. Playing at 1440p, I get around 70-85fps at max settings with xess quality. If I disable upscaling, I can reach the same framerate with textures at ultra and the rest of the settings set to a mix of mostly high and some medium. After setting a gpu fan curve, the hottest I've seen the GPU get is 64 Celsius, with vram hovering around 62 Celsius in a superposition benchmark. In terms of the ryzen 7700x, I was able to set a pbo curve of -35 on all cores, and I didn't crash after running prime95 for 20 minutes. I'll have to run core cycler and see if it is truly stable, although I haven't crashed in any games yet. Because of this, it runs extremely cool. At most, I've seen it hit 55 Celsius and pull 75w when gaming. In the prime95 benchmark, it pulled somewhere around 120ish watts and hit a max temp of somewhere around 86 Celsius. According to hwmonitor, the hotspot was also around that same temperature.

This project was based around deal hunting during Black Friday week in November 2023. My target for performance was midrange gaming but I also wanted to be somewhat future-proof. Because more and more games are starting to require a bloated amount of VRAM to run well, I thought it was best to get a video card with more than 8gb. So that narrowed things down to the 12gb 6700xt that was a solid price on black friday at microcenter.

This started out as a "minor upgrade" to my gaming machine... ended up as a "build completely new machine and only keep the GPU and data drive". And I only kept the data drive since I replaced it a couple of months ago. Components not listed are the RTX 2080ti GPU, a 500GB NVMe as a boot device and a 2TB NVMe for data. Both Samsungs, but I don't remember the exact models (Evo 980 and 970 something). I output to a TV so I'm limited to 60FPS at 4K, and so far I am getting that with the highest settings on every game I've tried with no DLSS.
