The Overkill Mk. 1 The Overkill Mk. 1

After years of laptop gaming and dreaming of a proper rig for my heavier games, I finally made the leap and built it out. Starting with the hardest-to-find parts in the thick of parts shortages, I was able to ensure my build was balanced and available all at once. Now to get through my huge Steam backlog! The majority of the parts came from Micro Center, and one of the employees helped me spec it out as a balanced build with some parts I had already decided on. She had recommendations for anything I wasn't sure of, caught some errors (and saved me good money), and generally had a great attitude throughout! Throughout the build, I had to make a few changes from the original plan. - One of which was a switch from Crucial memory to Corsair. This was since the Crucial memory didn't have great RGB software and kept getting stuck in an ugly way. Plus, with iCue and the Corsair sticks, I was able to set the hardware defaults so it wouldn't blast rainbow on startup! - Another difficulty I had was with the motherboard firmware. It turns out the RGB controller on the board had an issue where it froze up, and information online was limited. However, I was finally able to find an update via MSI's website that, after a few adjustments, I was able to bring it back in full! - Unrelated to the PC, there was a faulty in-wall ethernet connection in the office of my apartment. It took a long time to resolve, but a LV Electrician saved the day and found a break in the line where it met the panel. I was then able to take down the 25ft Cat6 that was temporarily stretched through the apartment and into the router. Now I have Cat6 running gigabit internet, through a switch, and right into the 2.5G LAN port on the motherboard! - Another issue is that my poor Corsair Virtuoso SE is having random glitches with audio output, but only on this machine. Occasionally and randomly, it will turn to painfully crackly static when in a discord call. Sometimes it gets better and sometimes it gets worse if I wait, but restarting the headset makes it disappear. I tried just about everything (all drivers and possibly relevant software uninstalled or reinstalled) until I found threads suggesting it was the UEFI/BIOS. It looks like the more recent B550 UEFI/BIOS updates have continually chipped away at this problem, so I'm still hopeful, but I should probably reinstall Windows just to be sure. - Finally, I have minor annoyances with the RGB and software of multiple brands being so inconsistent or incompatible. For the crazy amount of money I spent on name brands, I definitely expected a smoother experience! SignalRGB ended up being the cleanest way to control them all, but it's still not perfect. Hoping this continues improving in the future!$4,268.09 -

I built this PC mainly for gaming and general purpose uses to replace my Haswell system that died around 2019. Unfortunately, I was not knowledgeable in computer hardware back in the day and in hindsight I might have gone with some higher end specs in various pieces of hardware that I ended up replacing in the last two years or so.$2,304.90 -

I built this computer originally just to play some demanding games, and do some schoolwork. However I got into 3d design, and 3d printing things so I use it for that now as well. The main games that I play are Forza Horizon 5, Madden, and some PS3 emulation. Overall, the pc is a little overkill for what I do, but I'm glad I went overkill with it.$1,889.95 -

This was my first time building a gaming PC after being on console only forever. I mostly play Battlefield 4, Deep Rock Galactic, Overwtach, and cRPGs (like Divinity and Tyranny). I built Ernie because my old PC could not handle everything I wanted to do. I know, sounds pretty generic. This was a huge build for me. I have lived my whole life using low end, or very old hand-me-down parts. I had built a brand new PC before but it was entry-level at best, and I was not smart and favored looks over performance. I learned my lesson and buckled down and saved every penny one summer. I was going to spare no expense. RGB and looks were low on the list, but still very important. I was going for a Storm Trooper theme PC, and I think that turned out. I wanted the maximum performance possible, fast storage, and lots of it. The latest graphics and features and the RTX 2080 Super from EVGA fit the bill nicely. I wanted the CPU to have at least 8 Cores, so it would excel at recording and streaming. I was originally looking for the PC O-11 Dynamic, but it required fans and water cooling looks sick in that case, but I don't plan to do a custom loop, anytime soon. The Fractal Design Meshify C, it has good thermals and even better looks. It is pretty small for an ATX chassis. The biggest reason I built Ernie, was so I could start doing Youtube, and Streaming. My old PC could not handle gaming and recording at the same time, and struggled to run most games at 1440p/60FPS. I am looking to upgrade my monitor to an LG UltraGear IPS 144hz QHD Monitor. I also am looking to upgrade the AMD Stock Cooler to a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, because the stock cooler is super loud. I need to add more fans to further improve thermals, I am looking at some Corsair HD120's those look nice and perform well. If you read this far, Thank You, and maybe subscribe to my new YT Channel, QuackoOperator, I have already posted a video about this PC and I hope to continue to grow the channel and make some gaming content in the future. I want to make a series on F1 2020, maybe some Nascar Heat 5, and other racing games and shooter games such as COD: MW/Warzone.$1,807.91 -

I wanted a computer that had good processing power, could also run some games, and I was able to obtain most of the parts at a good price. Occasionally I need to either compile some code or edit a video, and the Ryzen 7 3800x has yet to disappoint. It also has plenty enough power when combined with the 1660 Super for the games I play. It has no problems with League of Legends, Modded Minecraft, Assassins Creed: Odyssey, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This build was not planned, it just sort of came together. Some pieces are new, used or damaged. The Meshify C case has a 4” gash on the top mesh, so I bent it back into shape. The Ryzen 7 3800x had bent pins, so I risked it and managed to straighten the pins. I bought a kit of the TridentZ RGB RAM from a friend and purchased an additional clearanced kit to not have empty RAM. The GPU and PSU were salvaged from another build. The only new and planned purchases were the motherboard, AIO cooler, case fans, NVMe drive, and RGB led strips. This shows that you do not need to buy everything at once or everything new always in order to achieve a good-looking build.$1,706.89 -
