I like old-school tech, tinkering, and trying to make things work that don't make sense. So, I took an old Compaq Presario 4090US Internet PC case, gutted it, chopped away some of the metal on the back, and squeezed modern parts into it. Well, mostly. The system is a fully-functional modern computer, though for extra fun, I've Hackintoshed it to run macOS Monterey. Even though it's running the latest macOS release (as of this writing), it's still got old-school charms: I've got a working floppy drive and optical drive inside of it. Was even able to use the original power LEDs! The only real trouble was finding where to put the power supply, as the case was designed for a proprietary sized PSU. Right now, I'm just using double-sided mounting tape to stick it to the bottom of the case. Hey, it works! :D For comparison, this computer originally had 128MB RAM, a 30GB hard drive, an 800MHz Celeron, and ran Windows ME.$684.94 -

I had an (probably 10 years) old computer that I built and have been using it daily ever since. At two separate points throughout it's lifecycle, I made two massive upgrades - 1) going from an HDD boot drive to an SSD, and 2) upgrading the video card from one that was mid-range at the time of installation to a modern mid-range card. The video card upgrade was probably 3-4 years ago. Now that I am permanently remote in my day job, I get to spend an enormous amount of time on sitting at my computer. With new lines of CPUs having just been released, I figured now was as good of time as any to do a full, much-needed rebuild of my daily PC. I work on my computer for the full day, every day, and work on side projects (web development, writing, etc.) in the evenings. I do some gaming, but haven't really had a capable machine to really enjoy it in many years. With that, I am many years behind on PC games, so I don't need to play the latest and greatest. With that, and a budget, in mind, I built the whole system from the ground up, but decided to reuse the existing video card. GPU prices are ever-so-slightly beginning to come down, so I thought I'd wait a bit to buy one while catching up on the past 6-8 years of games I haven't been able to play.$869.93 -

This low-end gaming rig is used for casual gaming (League of Legends, Valorant, etc.) and day-to-day internet browsing. It began as a refurbished HP Pavilion desktop, but grew up to be an HP Pavilion desktop with two sticks of Ripjaws RAM (2x8gb) and two SSDs (both purchased from Micro Center). Even though the build is not stuffed with the best graphics card or CPU, it chugs along just fine.$582.96 -

A lot of my friends played games online and I had no way to play with them. Over time I saved up bits of money to go towards my first build. The games I've played so far on this beast of a machine is Forza Horizon 4, Minecraft, TF2, COD BO3, Escape from Tarkov, Gmod, and Squad. I've had so much fun being able to play games online with other people. I just love the teamwork in games. I wish I could've gotten a smaller case because on the inside it is quite empty and bland looking, but I still love my PC. Someday I'll be able to upgrade the parts and make it look nicer.$949.92 -
