Why I Built It: As a manufacturing engineer, I work extensively with software and require a system that can effortlessly manage complex modeling in SolidWorks and render Unreal Engine graphics. Simultaneously, as a lifelong gaming enthusiast, I wanted a rig capable of delivering unparalleled gaming experiences. From my daily work routines to unwinding with the latest AAA titles, this build fits the bill. This rig has transformed my workflow, enabling faster render times, smoother gaming experiences, and overall improved efficiency. Professional Work: In my profession, time and precision are of the essence. Built a new gaming/encoding/media PC rig to replace my aging 8700k/GTX 1660 rig. Went AMD this time - AMD R9 7900X CPU, AMD RX 6950 TX GPU, 64 GB DDR5 6000 Ram, 3 2TB PCI4 4x4 M2 SSD's (OS and APPS, Games, and encoding), ASUS X670-P PRIME WIFI AMD AM5 ATX Motherboard. 2 Additional PCIE USB 3.2 cards (I need LOTS of USB ports for peripherals and the 8 USB3 media storage drives - 125TB total and growing), 750w full modular PS, be quiet SHADOW ROCK TF CPU Cooler, low noise SHADOW ROCK case fans. Stuffed it all in a Silverstone Media PC case. Small compromises were made. Could not fit a liquid cooler so had to go with high efficiency air cooler (be quiet SHADOW ROCK TF) and extra low noise SHADOW ROCK case fans. Originally picked up an RX 7900 TX GPU but it too would not fit the case, so had to fall back to the RX 6950 TX Reference model (2" shorter). Everything fits pretty tight but the Silverstone case is really shitty for cable management, but it all worked out.$1,810.92 -

For those uninitiated, the Ship of Theseus is a philosophical question (stick with me, I promise!) discussed by the likes of Plato- "if you were to have a ship, or any other object, and replace every single component which it's made of, is that ship still the same ship?" I haven't built a new computer since 2012. Yet this is a build log for a machine which currently has a Ryzen 5000 CPU and a 3080. I'd like to use this space to advocate for one of my favorite parts of the DIY PC market - upgradability and expandability. Almost decade ago, I built a rig with a 3570k and the cheapest Z77 board on the shelf at Micro Center. Little did I know, after 3 GPU upgrades (iGPU to 750ti, to RX 470, to the 3080), an accumulation of storage both mechanical and solid state, RAM upgrades (8GB to 16GB DDR3, then 16GB of DDR4), a new motherboard and 2 CPU upgrades (3750k, to r5 1600, to r5 5600), as well as the addition of RGB Strips and Fans - I'd still be using the same case and power supply I bought way back when Windows 7 was still the latest and greatest. As technology evolved and my budget grew, I was able to "level up" my rig - one piece at a time. My machine has grown with me, been there through thick and thin. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I could afford to replace my case, it would certainly help with temperatures to do so, but this cheapo case has been through battle and back with me. I'm not sure I could really call it "my computer" if it wasn't in a stormtrooper-esque enclosure of questionable integrity. The fact it's a bit of a "sleeper" (ironic as it may be to use the term on an RGB-clad system) is endearing to me. Its dated, arguably cheap-looking exterior betrays the impressive compute power which lies within. Compared to buying an integrated system with a limited upgrade potential, a DIY PC can be stretched over time so far it barely resembles it's original creation, endowed with new capabilities unimaginable when you first built it.$2,425.94 -

Built as a daily driver gaming machine, future upgradability was a large consideration in the build. I wanted to right away game at 1080p over 60fps with most titles 2019 & older. However, I want to upgrade to be CPU The I5-10400f was bundled with the UX100 for $150 from an Amazon seller. The cpu and cooler were pulled from a gaming prebuilt, and were indeed in excellent condition. The I5-10400f itself is good, and will allow me to upgrade as far as a 3070. In early December of 2021, the RGB in the UX100 fried, and will be replaced with a gammaxx tower cooler soon. The RX570 was purchased on eBay, seemingly as an act from God, listed on eBay in October of 2021 for $225 before shipping. It had an RX580 mining vbios flashed to it, which I replaced with the vbios made for the card.$855.96 -

I wanted to get back into the PC scene. Its been awhile. However I wanted and all around PC that I could do pretty much... I wanted to get back into the PC scene. Its been awhile. However I wanted and all around PC that I could do pretty much anything on. I have always bought the standard prebuilt machines over the years and wanted something to call my own not HP or Dell HAHA. It was a little overwhelming at first but the associates at Microcenter pointed me in the right direction for everything and asked really good questions. Very Helpful. But I'm extremely happy with the perfomance and products I chose. Now looking forward to the next build and upgrades. LOL$2,225.88
