First, I was in the process of shopping for expanded storage for my current-gen xbox console. This was really frustrating because the proprietary format expansion cards the console must use are really expensive, especially compared to how prices have really fallen for pc storage devices (both sata and m.2 pci-e drives). The second instance that really sparked this build was seeing a RTX 3060 Ti graphics card at a really good price at Microcenter. With those two factors combined, I was ready to drop by plans of buying expensive console storage and just make my own DIY console.$1,129.91 -

This build has been a work in progress for well over 2 years ever since my 'gaming' laptop died, but this project remained on the backburner for quite some time as prices on GPU's were hard to justify for a long time. In the meantime I replaced my laptop with a Macbook but the screen on that is rather small and gaming isn't really an option. So here we are, the PC build with a modern GPU faster than 2080 Super with all the bells and whistles. The older titles I play run exceptionally at 4K Max and even Cyberpunk is playable thanks to DLSS. I feel like I can accomplish anything with this PC, whether its business related AutoCad work to using it as a network-wide home NAS server. I went with the Lian Li case not only b/c it's become iconic on the internet, but also b/c it's spacious having room for a secondary power supply as Der Bauer described it. This means I can easily upgrade anything down the road as I plan on keeping the case for a long time. I should have waited for the newer 40 series cards as they're probably a better value, but frankly I doubt I'd notice the difference.$1,351.94 -

One is a reliable system with decent performance I can use to do coursework and participate in online classes. The second "need" is, well.. gaming! The 6600 is meeting my gaming needs okay for the moment because I am playing games like Doom Eternal at 1080p resolution.$985.92 -

This was all new parts bought from MicroCenter with the exception of the GPU - bought second hand from Facebook Marketplace for $270. The 12400 is a GREAT CPU, and I think I won the silicon lottery since it got over 12,000 on Cinebench. The 3060ti is perfect for my 1440 gaming, and paired with 16GB of 3600mhz RAM at CL16, it is buttery smooth.$936.94 -
