INFO: What is PCI Express?

PCI Express or PCIe is a computer expansion card standard designed to replace the older PCI, PCI-X and AGP Standards. PCIe 2.1 is the latest standard for expansion cards and is backwards compatible with both the PCIe 2.0 and 1.0 standards. Note that PCIe card and ports are not compatible with PCI or PCI-X cards or ports.

PCI Express slots (from top to bottom: x4 , x16, x1 and x16 versions), compared to a traditional 32-bit PCI slot (bottom). PCIe is used in consumer, server, and industrial applications as a motherboard-level connection for expansion cards. The primary purpose for home users is for video cards, although more and more PCIe network cards and other various expansion cards are being made.
