A little over a year ago, AMD unleashed the then-undisputed king of gaming, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Now, the call of competition rings and it’s coming from inside the house. You can harness the power of the new AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D with a boosted clock speed of up to 5.6GHz for even greater gaming prowess at your local Micro Center.

Announced during CES 2026, this new 8 Core, 16 thread processor is built on AMD’s cutting-edge Zen 5 architecture and, of course, features the second-generation 3D V-Cache technology that makes the AMD X3D chips such potent gaming powerhouses. That 3D technology expands the L3 cache vertically, hence V-Cache, bringing the total L2 and L3 cache to a massive 104MB for faster frames and quicker load times.

The end result is, according to AMD, a processor that’s about 3% faster than its 9800X3D predecessor and our testing backs that up. We put the two processors head to head in Cyberpunk 2077, F1 23, and Blackmyth Wukong, as well as some standard Cinebench R23 tests. While most of our results see smaller improvements, there are some standouts, like a 9% FPS  increase in Cyberpunk 2077 at low settings and a 5% FPS increase in Black Myth Wukong.

One of the greatest AMD chip features makes a return here, as well: socket support. If you’re already using an AM5 compatible chip, like an older AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, you can simply pop the old chip out and drop in your new gaming king and get right back into the fight.
