AMD's new Ryzen AI Max Plus, and everything else announced at CES 2026
The Ryzen and Radeon chipmaker announced updates to its chips for midrange laptops and high-power workstations.News
Image: Jacob BoboOver the past few years, AI performance has been one of the driving forces behind chip company products. CPUs have been increasingly paired with AI functionalities, while GPUs have become a focal point of "neural" workloads.
During CES 2026 in Las Vegas this year, AMD focused its announcements on the next tier of devices, offering updates for its Ryzen AI and Ryzen AI Max series of chips for desktop and laptop computers.
Ryzen AI 400
AMD launched its Ryzen AI chips for high performance and midrange PCs in 2024, including chips for Microsoft's Copilot Plus AI-powered PC initiative. This year, AMD said it's updating its lineup with the Ryzen AI 400, which it says not only can power "next-gen AI experiences," but that it can do so across "multi-day mobility."
"We aimed for leadership performance across the CPU, GPU and NPU, so users can get amazing speed no matter what your task is," said Rahul Tikoo, SVP and GM for AMD's client business unit, in a press briefing. "You'll see this performance in what you do even when you're unplugged."
He noted that the AI 400 series will be built on the Zen 5 architecture. The highest-performing chip will be the Ryzen AI 9 HX 475, which will offer 12 cores and 24 threads of compute with 36 mb of cache, running at up to 5.2ghz boost clock. The integrated GPU, meanwhile, will power 16 RDNA 3.5 cores running at up to 3.1ghz . AMD said its included XDNA 2 NPU should provide up to 60 TOPS.
The Ryzen AI 9 465 meanwhile will offer a CPU with 10 cores and 20 threads, running on 34 mb of cache at up to 5 ghz boost. The GPU, meanwhile, will contain 12 cores (or compute units)

AMD didn't provide direct chip pricing, but said OEMs including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo will offer laptops and desktops starting as low as $499 in the first quarter of the year. HP will also be building what AMD said is the first keyboard with a desktop-class computer built in, capable of plugging into any monitor.
Ryzen AI Max Plus
AMD has expanded its more performance-focused AI Max series of chips as well, promising "workstation-level" computing performance combined with "immersive AAA gaming" capabilities.
The chipmaker said demand for its Ryzen AI Max and Max+ series of chips has led it to release the new Ryzen AI Max Plus 392, which sits just below the AI Max Plus 395 (as seen in this HP ZBook Ultra G1a we reviewed last year) with a slightly lower core count and max boost, but otherwise providing the same TOPs and GPU CU's as its more performant sibling.| MODEL | CORES/THREADS | MAX BOOST | NPU TOPs | GRAPHICS CUs | GPU TFLOPS |

AMD said companies including Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo will be announcing desktop, laptop and AI appliance devices powered by these new chips during the show, though it didn't provide any expected release dates.
Ryzen 7 9850X3D
AMD also announced what it said was an upgrade to the "world's fastest gaming processor" with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. This new chip is still built on the company's Zen 5 architecture, providing 8 cores and up to 16 threads of compute with 104MB cache running at up to 5.6 GHz boost clock at up to 120 W TDP. The new chip can act as a "drop-in upgrade" to Socket AM5 systems running DDR5 memory.
The chip sits in the middle of AMD's Ryzen 9000 lineup, which includes the Ryzen 9 9950X3D running 16 cores and 32 threads of compute with 144MB of cache at up to 5.7 GHz boost, and a 170 W TDP.

AMD didn't say how much the Ryzen 7 9850X3D will cost, but did say companies including Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Alienware will be announcing PCs powered by the chip at CES.
AMD FSR updates
The chip maker also announced updates for its latest FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology, which competes with NVIDIA's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), helping improve gaming performance through AI technologies. AMD announced its latest update, FSR 4, in December with improved upscaling technology. During CES, AMD said it will add more features for accelerated ray tracing, effects and frame generation.
In one example, AMD said its new FSR technology can provide 4.7x performance with 4k gaming on Microsoft's Call of Duty Black Ops 7, with ray tracing. "In fact, you can play faster than regular-4K with all the realism that ray tracing brings," AMD's Tikoo said. He added that more than 200 games support FSR as of 2025, and more are coming.
