Community Article Converting Intel Xeon based Workstation to run Windows 10 — Micro Center Converting Intel Xeon based Workstation to run Windows 10 HansenJC ✭ June 21 edited June 21 in Technical Support Questions A few years ago I built a workstation for video rendering.  The CPU is a Xeon E5-2620 The ram is 2x8 (total 16 MB) of DDR3 at 12,800 Mhz. The motherboard is an ASUS Z9-PE-D8 built into a larger server grade case. Now that the need to do a lot of video rendering is no longer the priority, I would like to upgrade to Windows 10. And now I am told by ASUS that this motherboard will not run windows 10. I am having trouble finding a motherboard that will make use of the CPU and RAM that I own. 1) Can someone suggest a motherboard that will use my CPU, RAM and run Win10? Please be sure you know that it will run Win10. I have already followed a number of leads that took me nowhere other than down a rabbit hole. Major brands are preferred. I hesitate being a guinea pig for an off brand. 2) I am willing to buy a second hand or refurbished Motherboard if it will save me money and work with what I have already. I do not see any current new motherboards that actually list Windows 10 compatibility with a LGA2011 socket and DDR3. 3) I am willing to abandon some or all of the CPU and DDR3 that I own if I can find current or recent (not too old) Intel CPU/Motherboard/RAM at around $300 to $400. Then I will part out and sell the things I own. NOTE: I own a second empty ATX case and I think I would prefer an ATX motherboard for future incremental expansion with more RAM and a second Video card. I may want to do some streaming in the future. NOTE: I am not a gamer. But I do a lot with 3D applications such as Fusion 360 and Blender. Photoshop is also a regular piece of software for me. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Comments TSTonyV admin June 22 From what information I've found, I don't think you'll find any motherboards that CPU will work with that officially support Windows 10. The platform is just too old . That doesn't mean they won't work, it just means you're more likely to experience issues if you try to install Windows 10 on a system with a board like that. It would probably work fine, but you don't have that 100% guarantee of working properly. If you're willing to look around at newer but used Intel parts, I'd personally look at something like a used i7-8700k. You should be able to find an 8700k + Z370 motherboard + RAM for 300-400. The 8700k is also a six-core/12 thread part so it would still do well in multi-threaded workloads. Probably better than the Xeon given how much newer it is.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 22 Thanks @TSTonyV I will look for the parts you suggest. I have tried to install windows 10 retail version onto this current computer and it would not install.  I called ASUS and they told me Win 10 was not supported on that Motherboard. And their site was challenging to use their list of compatible motherboard for any boards that I would most likely find on the used market. They seem geared to promote their current products without any desire look back into history. This was just my perception of the way it is. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSTonyV admin June 22 Yeah, manufacturer websites tend to focus on the newer, currently supported stuff. For older hardware like this you usually have to do a little digging from other sources to the exact answers you want. Let us know if you have any other questions! 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 22 edited June 22 @TSTonyV Thanks for you help. As I search for these MBs there are some marked 1151 300 series and others (much cheaper) that are not marked 300 series. Which of these is required for the i7-8700k ? The 300 Series MBs are 3x the price of the other motherboards. And is there such a thing as i7-8700 (not K) I am not planning to overclock it. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 23 From what I'm seeing with the C600 chipset, it's not officially supported, but it will run Windows 10. Most of the issues with either installing or updating center around the SAS RAID controller. Are you using RAID or SAS drives and are you trying to upgrade in place or clean install? i7-8700k and 9700k will both utilize a 300 series board. All 300 series boards are socket 1151. It just depends on what you want to be able to do with the board so far as overclocking in general. You'll need a Z370 or Z390 board, otherwise most overclocking options will be unavailable to you.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 26 Thanks @TSMikeW I tried to 'upgrade' or 'Update' from win 7 to windows 10. And it failed on my workstation. I bought a full retail version of Win 10. Not using RAID. No intention of overclocking. I am watching for used Z370 (or Z390) and I will narrow it down to the 300 series. I can stretch the budget if needed and I am also not on a fixed timetable for completion. I might look for a windows 8.1 license just to have another year or two support before I dismantle this workstation that I have now. That will get me through till I can find the right CPU and motherboard at a modest price to run Windows 10. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 26 If you want to provide more information on the error, we can look into this for you. Not even MS. My hesitation with this method is that while I do have a backup of 99% of all relevant data files and directories, I have never in my life found a restore method that was described well enough to give me confidence. I could always use a new SSD that is freshly formatted and see how that works. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 27 I tried it one more time and I get to a point where I get a message ACPI BIOS ERROR 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 28 edited June 28 The setupact.log will contain much more useful information. With the ACPI_BIOS error, was this post update or was this an attempt at a clean install? The error in the setupact.log is a connectivity error. Assuming you installed with a clean install we'll check several things that may be the cause of this error, I assume right as you're trying to boot to the media.  Check your storage controller mode, let use AHCI. If you swap back to your other OS on another drive, make sure you change this, or you'll BSOD, until you do. Also, disable virtualization. VT-D and VT-X. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 28 @TSMikeW I assume that a 'Clean Install' is the one in the menu that allows me to save my data? If not, I did the dirty install. And before I try to follow along as you lead me to check all those 'several things', did I tell you early in this thread that ASUS does not include this motherboard in its list of boards that support Windows 10? I even asked in their support channel and they very likely checked the same compatibility list that is posted on the internet and that support person told me Windows 10 is not supported by the ASUS Z9-PE-D8. Do we still want to try this? 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 28 That's up to you. Keep in mind that "Not Supported" means "Not Tested", not necessarily that it won't work. A workstation board with a C600 chipset is definitely going to be more difficult than average. If you're going to do anything, make sure you either protect the original driver or have a system image to roll back to. Verify any BIOS settings that may cause you a problem, or backup your data so that you have an easy way back. We can try and work through it with you. It's entirely possible you won't be able to get Windows 10 to run on it, either via upgrade or clean install. But if you'd like to keep the machine, we'll see what we can do. Just protect your data and so forth. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 29 edited June 29 I took the computer to my nearest Micro Center to have them install Windows 10, and that was a discouraging adventure. The tech wanted to invoice me before he even started. And he put less effort into the installation of Windows 10 than I have into it already. He did not even read the error messages. I guess the motherboard manufacturer was right and Windows 10 is not supported. This is one experience when I wish I had a body camera to record what transpired. The tech suggested that I would have to do a clean install. So I bought a new SSD and installed it and and this solution was Déjà vu all over again. FAIL. Disappointment in Micro Center. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 29 We do apologize for the poor experience.  It may very well have been an issue of how far our service department could go on this, for fear of leaving you with a potentially unstable system. If you would help trying to work through this on  your own I will provide all of the assistance that I can. It's possible that there isn't a solution to get this system working on Windows 10, but there may be a work around.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 30 edited June 30 Thanks @TSMikeW. Now that I have a new clean SSD, to prevent any OS confusion over which drive we are going to install the Windows 10 system on, I have removed all other drives. So, this system should look like a new build. There is only one error message. As before, that error is: ACPI BIOS ERROR. Where do we go from here?  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin June 30 edited June 30 Check your BIOS settings, as that's all you can really control. Assuming the crash is as it's loading to the windows 10 media. Check what your SATA controller version is, and also disable virtualization for now. Also check under Advanced > PCI Sub-System Settings. See if you have a 4G Decoding setting. If that setting isn't there, you're on an old BIOS version. I did some more digging into this board and it seems you're going to have the same error with Windows 8.1. This was an issue for both 8.1 and Server 2012. It was corrected in a BIOS update by ASUS. So if you update your BIOS to the latest version your issues should go away entirely. Everything I can find on this board, says it'll work and there are drivers for every component on Windows Update. The only component you may have an issue with is the SAS controller. Now, with the BIOS update. Good news and bad news. Bad news: When you flash the BIOS there's always a small chance you can brick your board in doing so.. It's the motherboards firmware, if it goes wrong, you're not going to be able to POST. Good news: Your BIOS chip isn't soldered, it's a DIP IC. This isn't too common anymore but either DIP or PLC sockets are nice to have because they make an issue like this easily correctable. I used to use sites like BIOSMan, but I don't think they're around anymore, but such sites do still exist. It is possible to order a replacement BIOS chip from a company like that, and they'll flash it with whichever BIOS version you like. Buy a DIP extractor as well to easily remove it. It's a DIP-8 IC. Should be able to get everything for under $20, even if you're doing it as as backup plan. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ June 30 Thanks @TSMikeW I will work my way through these steps and see what I get. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ July 1 @TSMikeW I have found that I have an old BIOS. And I am working through doing a BIOS update. I may need to use Plan B because the update tools from ASUS are not well described. ASUS has an update utility but will not tell anyone how to use it. (The videos on YouTube do not look anything like what I see on my machine.) To quote the ASUS website: "Since it is a little complicated to enter BIOS Utility for updating BIOS, this article will only introduce how to update BIOS in Windows." Are we having fun yet? :-) MORE: In you instructions above, you start by mentioning to check the SATA controller version, I have both SATA 3, and SATA 2. The SATA 3 is connected to the DVD drive, but the SSD is connected to a SATA 2. Is any of this critical? I have a second SATA 3 connection that I could connect to the SSD. Am I correctly understanding your comment about the SATA controller version? 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ July 1 ASUS makes it impossible to get support. All of the ASUS documentation for flashing a BIOS is for laptops or Windows 10 (I am not there yet) I cannot find a video that shows how to for the EZflash 2 that I have on my current system. I have downloaded the latest BIOS but EZflash 2 does not recognize the file that I unzipped from the download. This sucks. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ July 1 @TSMikeW I am unable to find a domestic source for a Bios chip that is NOT Ebay or offshore. Do you have one that you recognize? 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ July 1 @TSMikeW Was I supposed to rename the BIOS file the I extracted? Change the file extension? I cannot fine any hard data on what name the EZ Flash 2 program needs. All I read are posts that say "you must rename the file" 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin July 1 You can find the manual here: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA2011/Z9PE-D8-WS/Manual/E12544_Z9PE-D8_WS_UM_V5_WEB.pdf Pages 4-4 and 4-5  have details on the methods of flashing the BIOS and how to do so. Make sure the flash drive is formatted FAT32 or it won't be readable.  As for a replacement BIOS I can't recommend a specific company that's in the US that would offers this anymore. PLC and DIP just stopped showing a while ago. Last time I remember having a PLC socket on a board was a Foxconn BloodRage X58 board. Just plan for the worst, back everything up. I've never bricked a board with a BIOS update, but I've seen it happen. Have an alternative arranged just in case. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter HansenJC ✭ July 2 @TSMikeW Thanks for your constant encouragement. I was finally able to reach ASUS support and after multiple chat sessions, it became clear that there was a BIOS update from 2012 that changed how subsequent updates worked. So, they now use a different Bios update file extension from previous updates. And that old update was required before any later updates would work. Once they found this issue, I only had to flash the Bios twice, and now Windows 10 was able to be loaded. I am now working through all my software to see what works and what needs to be fixed. But it appears that the hardware is working with Windows 10. Thanks again for your knowledge and effort. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMikeW admin July 3 Hey, that's good to hear. You should be good from here on out and that's not surprising. I looked at it and saw the ROM files, and my thought was you were going to have to use AFUDOS or a similar utility to flash it from a ROM file. Considerably easier once you're current enough to use EZ Flash.  I don't think you'll require any drivers that aren't on Windows Update for the motherboard, for anything besides the SAS controller if you're using it. If anything comes up, let me know. I'll see what I can find. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Sign In or Register to comment. Sorry for your loss. I recently lost someone to COVID within my extended family, so while I was making light of the situation, it IS a serious matter. I'm very appreciative of all the folks that have joined the fight by folding, whether that's with MicroCenterOfficial or another team. With as much social distancing and isolation that's going on, this is at least something that feels like we're being proactive and trying to do something to help. 2 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMichaelB admin May 1 Warning: What you are about to see may cause extreme discomfort or sheer amazement. You might be asking yourself: "What in the world am I looking at?!". Well, let me explain... This motherboard & CPU happens to be the very same components used in our Threadripper 3990X review. They sit atop an industrial grade foam, held to the chassis using only the finest zip ties on the market. To cool this monster, we opted for a 360mm AIO and special nano-fiber velcro ties. Since we are folding for team Micro Center, I opted for the blue. Lastly, we needed some monster graphics cards to fold with. I grabbed a couple 2080 Ti's and a 2080 Super and put them to work. So far, this configuration nets around 9M PPD according to the folding client, however I am looking to expand on the PSU to use another GPU.  In all seriousness, if you want a similar setup, these open air "miner" chassis are phenomenal to work with. Helped improve my scoring by giving me some space in between the GPU's so I wasn't starving them for air. My clock speeds went from 1630mhz when constrained on airflow back up to 1900mhz boost clocks. My exact chassis and risers are listed below. Chassis: https://www.microcenter.com/product/505935/kingwin-6-bay-miner-atx-open-air-gpu-case PCIe Extension Risers: https://www.microcenter.com/product/602666/bitspower-pci-express-x16-30 If you do go this route, use a normal ATX motherboard and a standard ATX power supply. My use of an EATX motherboard made this far more difficult than it needed to be, as none of the standoffs lined up, resulting in me insulating the metal frame with a thick piece of foam and zip tying the board down. My PSU, while the same width as a normal ATX PSU, is much longer. I would recommend going with a standard size and tying the cables up for a cleaner look.  Either way, I've had a lot of fun working on this project and I am thankful that everyone else is pitching in too. If anyone was worried about their setup, hopefully this makes you feel better! 3 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter kmiller922 Glenside, Pa ✭✭✭ May 2 edited May 2 So I did finally pull the trigger and purchase a new viedo card, but not to worry my old one is still up and turning as I type. I was going to get the 2080 super but as it turned out the inventory file was incorrect how ever since I was already there they checked to see what they did have on hand at the store. I left with the Asus RTX 2080 TI Overclocked. So came home and moved a few things around in my case. Also processor is the I9-9900 As You can see I was lucky enough not to have to move a hole lot much to the credit of my case with the cable mainly ran to the back side to allow better airflow in the case. Now my 980 Ti card is just below the 2080 Ti and is working very smothly. Pardon the dust as my son decided to snap the picture just before I cleaned it. 2 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter MightyMayfield Mayfield Heights, OH ✭✭ May 2 TSMichaelB said: They sit atop an industrial grade foam, held to the chassis using only the finest zip ties on the market. The number of exabytes is down to 2.1.  We were folding over 2.4 at the beginning of my journey here.  This means every team is losing members.  FAH needs to get itself back in the press again.  More importantly, there needs to be a way to find a community that hasn't been tapped to help out.  MIght I suggest a few ideas... Stadiums and Arenas: (When not in use there are hundreds of computers sitting idle in a stadium) Start a town computing project:          Every town that has a library or town hall take one computer and set it up to run FAH.  As of 2018, there are 19,495 incorporated cities, towns and villages in the United States. 14,768 of these have populations below 5,000.  Presume 15000 computers at a minimum of a Core2Duo.  That's 60,000 cores producing 20 Petaflops. Hospitals and clinics:        There are over 7000 hospitals and clinics in the US.  Imagine if every hospital and clinic contributed one computer to the cause. Corporations:       There are tens of thousands of corporations across the US.  Some are small, some are huge.  Most have an IT department.  Take one scrap computer (or more) and set up FAH stations around the company, showing how they are supporting the fight against disease. I don't have the connections to get these ideas to people except on a one on one basis.  As a grass roots methodology I am just one person and I have tried to encourage people to join this fight.  Others are in better places to make changes, and kick this up to WSU for them to consider.  I presume WSU has a marketing team?  I'm just an idea guy.  Maybe someone here knows how to run with it. Be cool, Kirito 1 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter kmiller922 Glenside, Pa ✭✭✭ May 23 edited May 23 I'd also add to that list every towns schools as well as colleges and university's. There are so many places that have the cpu and gpu that could be put towards the efforts. This is more of the social model of helping people to see the value of the technology beside surfing YouTube and checking email.  This also distributes the power costs over a broader range of people.  This logic could also be applied globally.  "What if they gave a war for a virus and everyone came?"  Declaring war against Covid-19 as a full political model, and then develop strategy and tactics appropriately we could be more efficient about beating it. Defense:      Social Distancing      Face masks      Working from home      Contact tracing      Support Systems (Hospitals, Testing)      Home front contributions                              FAH, Making Masks, Ventilators Offense:      Intel:        Scientific research, data sampling, Virus Modeling      Attack:     Vaccination, Medication      Weapons:     Distributed computer modeling, scientific research facilities, pharmaceutical plants      Support systems:     IT, FAH, Communications We are just one part of this war.  We do our job.  We need more Rosie the Riveter's, one rivet at a time, helping to find the answer to this. FAH gives people a way to contribute, to fight the war, instead of being locked in their house and powerless.  We may not be the most efficient, but when we work together we can overwhelm the problems. So in the end it may be less about efficiency, and more about pulling people together. Like I said, its just an idea.  I just don't know how to reach a broader audience with it.  I am just a geek with a few computers.  I'm not a salesman.  I just operate equipment.  I just think it would be better if we had more weapons at our disposal. admin April 20 @JADO have you attempted to manually add them by going to Configure > Slots > Add? You should be able to leave the GPU value at -1. From there, add a slot for each potential GPU connected to the system, then save. They should reappear. If that doesn't work, you may be missing the GPUs.txt file in your [email protected] Client AppData directory. If that file is missing, visit this page, select all, save it into a notepad text file named GPUs.txt and place it in the %AppData%\FAHClient directory (Windows + R to open Run prompt, type that directory in for quick access). GPUs.txt page: https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt Hopefully this works, if not, let me know. I'll try to troubleshoot more with you. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter JADO ✭ April 20 edited April 20 Thanks for the help.  I am pretty knowledgeable on this stuff and at this point I am guessing it a Windows issue....but, I have no way to know.  I have tried to add them manually but since FAH sees no GPU's the add disappears as soon as I exit and go back to the settings sheet.  I have also looked at the GPUs.txt file and it is where it is supposed to be  and again everything worked correctly for over 2 weeks.  The cards have two bios's on them. You can select them with a switch.  one was modified for crypto mining the other is stock..  I was using the stock bios and everything worked fine.  I switched to crypto bios (to see if I could improve speed) and everything still worked but it was not stable.  So, I switched back to standard bios which had been working and after the switch back Folding stopped finding the cards.  Again, they show up in device manager and it reports they are working normally.  When it stopped was when I started uninstalling and installing card drivers and FAH in different combinations but have not been able to get them to reconnect.. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter JADO ✭ April 20 Thanks for helping.  I installed 7.6.9 today and I was able to manually add the GPU's.  Problem seems to be solved for now.  Thanks again. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMichaelB admin April 20 Interesting that it only started after swapping to and from the VBIOS using the physical toggle switch. When you nuked the GPU drivers, did you use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)? Just wanting to make sure every registry entry tied to those drivers were removed prior to reinstallation. Can you provide the name of the exact model of RX 580 you're using? I'll see if I have any lying around that I can try to replicate the issue with.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter JADO ✭ April 20 edited April 20 Actually, I don't think the VBIOS had anything to do with it.  I think it related to the latest FAH updates.. but again I am not sure.  I did use DDU (full discosure..I did not run it in Safe Mode) then I used Regedit and deleted all remnants of FAH I could find.  Still don't know why it would not find the cards after that  but after installing 7.6.9 today I was able to find and add them manually.  With 6 RX580s and a i5 9600K 6 core processor should I have any problems running all 6 cards?  Can I also safely use some of 6 cpu cores in addition to the GPU's?  Adding cards manually, FAH also added my Intel 630 motherboard graphics  GPU for processing.  I removed it because I figured that would just cause problems.  I guess what I am asking is with the hardware I have what do thin the optimal folding configuration for folding should be here?  Thanks  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMichaelB admin April 20 Glad to hear the GPU's are recognized now. As for the hardware configuration, [email protected] recommends leaving one processing core per GPU. Since your 9600k has exactly 6 cores, I wouldn't recommend folding on the CPU at all as it will be of very little gain and may be detrimental to your GPU's scores, which are weighted far more heavily in terms of value. I don't see any issue running the Intel iGPU as it simply uses 2MB of cache and some spare system memory, so it shouldn't impact your stability at all. It might not score all that well, but it shouldn't hurt anything either.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter JADO ✭ April 20 My thoughts exactly.  Thank you for confirming.  Appreciate the help. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSMichaelB admin April 20 My pleasure. The summer months will be difficult as most people will be paying more than double for the cost to run gear because of the cost to extract the heat generated. Of course no HVAC system is near 100% efficient, so summer PPDs can strain budgets & emotional commitments to a cause. One of the reasons I posted above about trimming watts expended and selecting gear with higher PPD/watt. Hi teamtempest, the amount of WU in a project can vary greatly depending on the type of research it is. I would advise looking at the scientific papers published by the FAH team if you would like to see what ends up of the computational power! Some of them are quite interesting reads. Yes, you can certainly speak to one of our BYOPC reps in store and they can help you. I would probably suggest coming in and speaking to them first to get started. 2. Possibly, if they're in our website inventory we can have them delivered. We are getting in new inventory very frequently, it may very well be available when you're ready to go. 3. Yes, if you can't locate the part in our store you can bring it parts from another retailer. The only issue we have here is that we can't RMA the part if it's DOA. We would have to ask you to pick it up and RMA it with the other retailer yourself. Otherwise, you're right on for music production. CPU and RAM are your main concerns. GPU is secondary, but you do want a decent card. There are several plug ins  used for music production that do utilize GPU rendering. It's a relatively small work load for the GPU so you won't need anything crazy here. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter kcorrales_88 ✭ June 11 Thanks for the quick response! The easiest area to save cost would be on the CPU and motherboard. There's almost no reason to get a 9900X at this point in my opinion, especially at that price. The Intel i9-10900k is also a 10 core/20 thread part just like the 9900X, but can be paired with a much more reasonable Z490 motherboard for saved cost. Those two by themselves could save you ~$500+ on the total cost of your build and you wouldn't lose any performance.  I'd also put in a good word for the Ryzen 9 3950X. It's a 16 core/32 thread part and can also be paired with a reasonable X570 motherboard. In my opinion if you're looking at CPUs in that price range/category, it's just the best overall option. It has more cores/threads and still packs in good single-threaded performance. It also supports PCIe 4.0 if that's something you're interested in, which the Intel chips are lacking right now.  The one reason to get a 9900X or another extreme series Intel processor would be if you specifically need a larger amount of PCIe lanes on your system. Otherwise, I would personally choose the Ryzen 9 3950X at that price point, or go with the 10900K if you really want to go Intel.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter kcorrales_88 ✭ June 11 Thanks for the feedback! If it turns out to be software related technically the warranty doesn't cover that, however the service desk may still be willing to work with you on it. I can get a message to our service desk to have them reach out and discuss this with you. If you'd like me to do so, let me know and I'll send you an email follow-up to get the information I need.  1 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Answers TSTonyV admin August 1 When you say it never seems hot and is hitting low 80s, is that when the system is under load, or is that when it's idling? If it's just idling at 80 degrees, that is WAY too hot.  When you get these shutdowns, do you get any kind of error message or blue screen when it happens? Does it seem to happen more often when you're doing one particular thing, or does it feel completely and totally random? 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 edited August 1 This machine always runs around low to mid 80s Fahrenheit.  I was told that is pretty normal.  Idle I mean, web page up, security cameras on, mail app. open.   I have 3 fans, plus the 2 fans on the cooler.   Maybe you thought I mean Celsius.  No error, just shut down.  If on boot up, if it didn't show the generic windows splash screen, you wouldn't know it crashed/ shut down.  Right now it just is random and not while I'm using machine, which is better than couple weeks ago.  Then it would shut down while using it. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSTonyV admin August 1 edited August 1 Correct, I was assuming you meant Celsius because most temperature monitoring software measures in Celsius.  What I would probably do is try running the system in Safe Mode and see if the shutdown occurs then. If it doesn't, then that would indicate there's some type of driver or piece of software that's causing it to shut down when Windows is in normal mode. In which case I would do what's called a clean boot  and then reinstall your motherboard and GPU drivers.  Have you checked event viewer to see if there's a common error message that corresponds to the shutdowns? 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 It just now crashed, first time today.  I walked away came back and pc off.   It's been on since early morning.  I did open corsair app. and checked the temperature.  I have 2 corsair services running maybe it's Corsair  I could turn it off again in systems start up?   Im going to look at event viewer but it never helps me.  Tech told me last time that the warnings in log didn't mean anything. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 I really don't want to run this think in safe mode all day.   I'm going to look at windows system log now. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 4- 1016 DCOM's, Windows Defender update at 1:06 pm.  Not sure if that was right after I booted up or not. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 info....system start drivers did not load......error The Corsair Gaming Audio Config service failed to start due to the following error:   The system cannot find the file specified Whole bunch of stuff, to bad we can't use team viewer or something to figure it out.   0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSTonyV admin August 1 You can still do a clean boot and reinstall your drivers even if you don't run it in safe mode, I think that would be a good starting point.  have you checked the temperature with any other software? A bad Windows update can cause all sorts of issues, a defective device attached to the system, a bad power outlet, there's all sorts of things that can potentially cause problems on a computer.  I think reinstalling the drivers and a clean boot are the first best steps, then testing to see if the issue persists. If that doesn't fix it, safe mode to determine if it's software related. If it happens in Safe Mode as well, it's either a hardware issue or something is corrupted within Windows itself that would require a reset/refresh. Otherwise, your best option is to bring it back to our service desk for evaluation.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 I haven't brought it back yet, just tech service over phone couple weeks ago.  Thanks for trying to help.  I turned off Corsair and Punkbuster, that's all that is left in system startup except for Microsoft and Malware, and see what happens.   I paid for extended warranty but I bet somehow this is going to be aggravating and probably cost me something.   bummer 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter Chas ✭ August 1 Sure this has been an issue since I brought it home.   I will look for your email.  thanks 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSTonyV admin August 1 Chas said: Sure this has been an issue since I brought it home.   I will look for your email.  thanks Sent you that email! What time do you intend to arrive?  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter floydian022 ✭ September 11 edited September 12 I mean, the stores don't actually open until 10am(and I'm only about 20mins from my nearest one), so I'm probably not going to actually overnight camp or anything.  My basic plan is:  1. Start hitting refresh on Amazon/Newegg/etc. at 11:59pm on 9/16(and checking forums a couple hours prior to start gauging the frenzy level). 2.  If FE & AIB cards are readily available(and Prime-eligible) from Amazon at midnight and I can grab one of my preferred ones(probably either AORUS, eVGA FTW3 or maybe just an FE), I'll likely just do that and wait the two days for delivery.   3.  If things are crazy and cards are going out of stock immediately and there's nothing left but Zotacs and MSIs by 12:03, then I'll check online stock for my local MC to see if any cards have been listed yet and plan to head to the store a couple hours or so before opening and play it by ear from there.  4. Worst case, if it's already total chaos by 7am at my local store and it becomes apparent that I have no shot at whatever stock the store might even have, I take my loss, go back home and wait and keep checking back here, amazon, bb, newegg, etc. for however long until cards are in stock again.   My own personal take:  While I do think there will definitely be a day 1 rush on these cards(because they look to be great cards at a very respectable relative price point), and that supply logistics certainly have been thrown a unique curveball that didn't exist during the 1000 or 2000 series releases, I think the latter issue could be more likely to impact brick & mortars like MC, whereas vendors like Amazon have clearly shown over the past few months that they have the capital, workforce and transportation capabilities to keep churning along(for the most part).   Also(and perhaps more importantly), I don't predict a huge influx of crypto miners for these cards like we've seen previously.  For one, mining has become exponentially more complex/difficult since then, and many of the small-timers have packed it in at this point.  For another, pricing these cards in the $700-800 range is going to undoubtedly cause a HUGE drop in prices for 1080Ti's and 20xx's, and we'll also see a bunch of them hit the eBay market as well.  That's a good thing overall, because there will inevitably be plenty of folks with 1060 6GBs who will go, "I'd really love to spend the $700 on a 3080, but I can get a slightly-used 2070S now for $300, which is almost as good!", and many miners to realize that they can get better value/returns by gouging that used market, rather than dealing with trying to scam the online retailers with bots on release day(prob easier to script/tweak existing bots for eBay auctions anyway).  Lastly, there's also speculation that the smaller 8nm architecture for Ampere will allow for greater die yeild(meaning that NVidia may have already produced more GPUs this time around).  All in all, I'm cautiously optimistic that I won't find myself sitting here empty-handed in October, still waiting for 3080s to be back in stock and debating whether to just repeat from step 1 with the 3070s, but who knows. edit: Apologies - I wrote this whole thing up and THEN realized it's a 3090 thread.  I'm an idiot.  Sorry about that.  edit 2: And then I actually went back and clarified it some more, just because I feel my logic still applies to my approach/opinion re: the 3080s, in case anyone out there stumbles upon this lol 1 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter joejccva71 ✭ September 11 To be honest I would stay away from online buying.  I know that in the past I've ordered from Newegg on parts where it showed in stock on launch day, and credit card went through.  A day or two later I received an email stating they were out of stock and had to refund me. I would get up early and wait in line at the store. 0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter floydian022 ✭ September 11 Unfortunately, that option may have just become less viable:  https://twitter.com/microcenter/status/1304475301100105729 Still no word on which(if any) AIB cards will be avaiable, or at which stores.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter TSTonyV admin September 11 edited September 11 floydian022 said: Unfortunately, that option may have just become less viable:  https://twitter.com/microcenter/status/1304475301100105729 Still no word on which(if any) AIB cards will be avaiable, or at which stores.  We will have AIB cards, we just don't know which ones or how many yet. Vouchers are physical and handed out to people by a store associate in accordance with whatever stock the store has. When they're handed out is handled individually by each store though.  0 · Share on FacebookShare on Twitter JmOverclock ✭ September 22 Why not wait 4-6 months and get a new card then? There will be plenty of stock and options. Let manufactures work out the bugs and Nvidia build better drivers. Why would you go to MC and risk yourself and others during covid battle that is still happening? Honestly it is extremely irresponsible for MC to even let people camp out at their stores. Bestbuy was smart for keeping it online. They obviously take the covid issue more seriously. If it wasn't for covid I would say by all means go ahead and camp. Whatever floats your boat. Exercise common sense because 30% of the people at microcenter camping are line holders and or being paid to be or are scalpers themselves. It's just not worth it.
