Choosing a Cable or DSL Connection Solution

Combo or Standalone: Many of today’s most popular modems are actually modem router combos. These all in one devices provide all the functionality you need for a strong WiFi connection: a high quality cable modem plus a wireless router to manage your Ethernet and WiFi networks. If you are unsure what is right for you, a Cable or DSL modem router combo is a great option.

Rated Speeds: Look at the maximum data speeds a modem is rated for. Most users today will want a modem rated for at least gigabit speeds - 1 Gbps or 1,000 Mbps - to accommodate today’s high speed broadband connections.

ISP Compatibility: Most modems are compatible with all of the most common ISPs. Just in case, however, you should always verify that your ISP supports your modem model before you make a purchase. Most ISPs have a list of supported modems on their website, although these may not always include every single supported model.

Ethernet Ports: If you will be connecting multiple network devices to your modem via Ethernet cables, make sure your modem offers enough Ethernet ports. Many have only one port, but larger models often have as many as four.

DOCSIS 3.0 vs. DOCSIS 3.1: These are two versions of the data transfer standard for cable internet service. DOCSIS 3.1 is the latest and fastest, although most ISPs and modems will still support DOCSIS 3.0 for some time. If you have a very high speed connection, it is a good idea to choose DOCSIS 3.1 to get access to the best speeds and bandwidth.
