Selecting Headphones and Earbuds

Headphones see daily use in a number of industries and activities. Earbuds specifically have become more prevalent recently because of their many applications ranging from audio listening to professional meetings and remote work. Other devices such as headphones or gaming headsets can also serve multiple purposes for work and leisure. Wireless headphones with microphones can be connected to multiple devices and used to communicate in any setting, from voice calls to in game lobbies.

Many headsets on the market have a wireless version available thanks to Bluetooth technology. Devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets can all connect to Bluetooth headphones and give users high quality audio without any pesky wires getting in the way. Bluetooth earbuds specifically are great for remote meetings and work from home situations where you may need to look professional and not use a large headset or microphone. One of the other benefits of Bluetooth headphones is that many devices support Bluetooth connections, so it is common to use a single headset with multiple computers or phones. Business focused features such as sound isolation or background noise reduction can also make headsets ideal for gaming and streaming. Over the ear headphones help to isolate sounds directionally and can give gamers a huge advantage over the competition. Wireless headphones with mics also allow gamers to easily communicate with teammates without the need for complicated setup or audio configuration.

AirPods are massively popular earbuds. When combined with the latest iPhones, they can provide users some of the most intuitive and high quality audio possible. The built in microphone in AirPods also makes them great for voice calls on the go or video calls in loud spaces. Other name brands such as Bose and Sony also offer noise canceling earbuds that work with tons of devices and are perfect for remote meetings or communications. Professional grade headsets such as studio monitor headphones from Audio-Technica take sound to the next level and provide great overall quality. While such high end headsets can come at a premium price, the massive amount of features and enhanced audio quality present in said devices make them favorites among recording artists and other audio based professionals. Top of the line headsets also excel in the modern workplace because of their exceptional stability and consistency.

But with so many gaming headsets are available in the market, it can be hard to pick out the perfect fit. Most gamers look for top-quality surround sound experience and, because these headsets are typically worn for long periods of time, comfort and fit. That’s just the start, however, as lighting, size, microphone quality, and connection can all play into it your decision as well. But not all factors are of equal importance - if you are buying a gaming headset for the first time, you will need to know what factors are important to you. Why Invest in a Gaming Headset? Although there are various similarities between conventional headsets and gaming headsets, here is what really differentiates them from one another and why you should invest in a gaming headset: 1. RGB Lighting Gaming headsets tend to have a less “office-y” look and often feature specialized designs, RGB lighting, and multiple color options. Some gaming headsets also have different RGB light settings, allowing for advanced customization. But, it should be noted that style has no bearing on sound quality and its relative importance will entirely depend on the consumer’s personal preference. 2. Size Since gaming headsets are usually worn for extended durations, they are usually bigger in size and often have cushioned ear cups making them more comfortable. Because of their bigger size, they are also slightly heavier than conventional headsets. 3. Microphone Most gaming headsets have a built-in microphone to allow gamers to easily communicate with their teammates and friends. Some models feature a detachable microphone, others a retractable microphone, and some headsets permanently and prominently feature the microphone. If you are looking at gaming headsets, be sure to know how you plan on using them – if you don’t have a separate microphone, don’t get a gaming headset without a mic! Factors to Consider When Choosing a Gaming Headset If you are buying a gaming headset for the first time, it is important to identify the most important decision-making factors to get the biggest bang for your buck. There are a few key ways in which gaming headsets differ from one another: ·        Since most gamers prefer a completely immersive environment, the sound quality is often the most important factor. ·        Comfort is the usually second most important factor, as gamers will most likely use their headsets for extended periods. ·        Gaming headsets are available in both wired and wireless options. Wireless headsets offer greater flexibility and convenience, without the risk of getting caught up in wires in the heat of the moment. ·        It’s also worth considering a multi-platform (such as PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox etc.) gaming headsets rather than one platform for greater flexibility. ·        Battery life and how long it takes for the gaming headsets to charge (if needed) is also an important consideration. You don’t want your headset dying on hour two of a twelve-hour marathon! ·        Some gaming headsets have a mic included. However, this is not the case with all available options. Whether this feature is a requirement will again depend on your needs. ·        And, of course, price. Gaming headsets are available at both ends of the spectrum, ranging from $299.99 to $25. The best choice will largely depend on your distinct needs and budget. Wired or Wireless: What Connection Should You Choose? As mentioned above, it is important to decide between wired and wireless gaming headphones. While wireless headsets continue to improve and are becoming more and more popular, there are some great wired options also available in the market. Wireless gaming headsets will generally be more expensive than their wired counterparts, but do offer some serious benefits. Wired gaming headsets are more susceptible to breakage due to tangled wires (I know I’ve knocked my headset off my desk more than once when my wires got caught on my chair….). Plus, if you’re wearing a wireless headset and you need to sprint away for any reason mid-game, your teammate can keep you aware of anything going on. Nothing worse than coming back to a game to find an enemy shotgun in your face! Virtual or Real Surround Sound? If you're getting a gaming headset, you're going to want Surround Sound. It enriches the fidelity and depth of the sound by employing multiple audio channels that surround the listener. But not all surround sound is the same. Gaming headsets usually have two types of surround sound technology: •                   Virtual •                   Real 1.     Virtual Surround Sound System In virtual surround sound technology, the “surround sound” effect is created via drivers and programs on your headset and computer. Because virtual surround sound doesn't use as many physical parts to create surround sound, the gaming headsets employing virtual surround sound technology tend to run cheaper than the headsets with natural surround sound systems. And, while it’s not quite as up-to-snuff as true surround sound, it’s still leagues above the standards of non-gaming headsets. 2.     Real Surround Sound System In real surround sound technology, the headset has special hardware that allows it to produce sounds that are just like real life. It adds an element of reality to the auditory experience. Nevertheless, better technology comes at a higher price. Thus, gaming headsets with real surround sound technology are more expensive. One thing that people seem to not take into consideration is what material the headphones are made out of. Plastic/pleather or cloth. I point out that if you are going to wear them for awhile getting the plastic/pleather make for some horribly uncomfortable ear sweat. I shoot people to the cloth models to lessen the sweat factor. Just some thing that gets overlooked. 0 · Share on TwitterShare on Facebook LandShark admin September 2021 https://community.microcenter.com/discussion/comment/36226#Comment_36226 Good point John! Beyond this, you can sometimes tell the difference between Closed and Open-back headphones! As you mentioned the material makes a huge difference. So much so, that there are some 1st party and many 3rd party replacement ear pieces. 1 · Share on TwitterShare on Facebook Leave a Comment Rich Text Editor. But nothing will print.  I have tried rebooting the home wireless modem router (still can't print), troubleshooting on my laptop (system found no errors with the wireless printer), restarting the wireless printer (no luck), and resetting the network on the wireless printer. My home wireless modem router shows the wireless printer is connected, and the wireless printer reports a status of a strong and connected WLAN. I even tried disabling and restarting the Print Spool function under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.  I still can't print a document from either laptop. Ironically, I can receive print jobs from my Android smartphone (I select "Print" and the wireless printer comes to life).  I have exhausted my options. My laptops and smartphone connect to the home wireless modem router. I will appreciate any solutions! I do not want to replace the wireless printer if I run into a similar issue with the network.  0 · Share on TwitterShare on Facebook Comments TSTonyV admin June 2020 Do you have a USB cable you can use to try plugging the printer directly into your laptops? That would be first instinct. If it can print successfully when using a USB cable, that means it has to be something to do with the wireless communication between the printer and computers. You mentioned you restarted your router, you could also try factory resetting your router. You'll have to re-connect your devices to wifi when you do this, but it's worth a shot.  I would also check and make sure your computers are set to a private network with network discovery turned on. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced Sharing Settings. Open the private category and make sure network discovery is selected.  0 · Share on TwitterShare on Facebook Categories 7.3K All Categories 1.1K The Blog 39 What's Trending 170 How to & Technical Guides 11 Computer Hardware 119 Software 3 Home Office 6 Networking Audio/Visual 2 Home Automation 17 3D Printers 12 Maker 20 PC Build Guides 100 Reviews & Buying Guides 39 Build Showcase 21 Contests 42 Past Contests 1.2K The Community 1.8K General Discussion 95 New Members 167 Consumer Tech 50 Prebuilt PCs and Laptops 86 Software 4 Audio/Visual 17 Networking & Security 1 Home Automation 3 Digital Photography 3 Content Creators 22 Hobby Boards & Projects 26 3D Printing 60 Retro Arcade/Gaming 87 All Other Tech 1.4K Store Information and Policy 55 Off Topic 8 Community Ideas & Feedback 115 Your Completed Builds 2.7K Build-Your-Own PC 1.8K Help Choosing Parts 241 Graphics Cards 179 CPUs, Memory, and Motherboards 64 Cases and Power Supplies 19 Air and Liquid Cooling 17 Monitors and Displays 30 Peripherals 12 All Other Parts 25 Featured Categories We love seeing what our customers build Submit photos and a description of your PC to our build showcase Submit Now Looking for a little inspiration? A: A USB wireless adapter is essentially a wireless network card that is used to access a network through a USB port on your computer. Wireless adapters allow your computer to connect to a wireless network for internet in the absence of an internal network card. Q: What USB wireless adapters do you have in stock? A: Store stock can be checked online at any time. Here is a link directly to the USB wireless adapters that Micro Center will have available. Q: How does the USB adapter plug into the computer? A: The adapter plugs into an available standard USB port. Computers normally have multiples of these ports. Q: Will my computer have internet when I plug the adapter in? A: The adapter allows you to connect to a wireless network provided by a wireless router or access point. If you know the password to connect to the wireless signal and it is connected to the internet, then you can have internet. Q: Is using a wireless adapter secure? A: Wireless networks offer a variety of security protocols to keep information safe and secure. As long as you configure one of these available options, your connection will be secure. Q: Does a wireless USB adapter connect to the internet like my phone? A: No, phones use a SIM card to access a data network using 3G, 4G, or 5G from a cell phone provider. While these networks are also wireless, this is not the same as what is supported by USB wireless network adapters. Q: Can the adapter be used on other devices? A: Generally they cannot. USB wireless adapters are designed to work with computers by installing drivers. Most work with PCs and many work with Macs, but the specifications of the driver for the USB adapter will determine compatibility. Q: Why doesn’t my USB wireless adapter work on my computer? A: If the wireless adapter isn’t working after plugging it in, it might be because you need to obtain the drivers from the manufacturer’s website. These are files that tell the wireless adapter how to talk to the computer and typically these are free downloads provided by the manufacturer of the wireless adapter. Q: How do I get the driver without internet? A: You can connect the computer temporarily to the router using an Ethernet cable, or you can download the driver on another computer and save it to a flash drive, then install it from the flash drive on the computer needing the driver. Q: Do I have to use the software included with the adapter? A: No. You only need the driver. Other programs are usually optional because modern operating systems have their own ability to connect to wireless networks once the driver is installed. Q: Why are some adapters more expensive than others? A: Some adapters have different hardware components and may have better performance specifications. For example, most adapters connect to 2.4ghz bands, but many of the better ones offer dual band support and can connect to the 5ghz band as well. Q: Why would I use a dual band adapter? A: Dual band adapters allow a faster connection when using the 5ghz band supported by the wireless network. Q: Why am I not getting the speed I paid for from my provider? A: Wireless adapters are still subject to the same interference that laptops face when using wireless connections. You can test the speed best with an Ethernet cable connected directly to your incoming source. If it doesn't test at what speed you are paying for, contact your internet provider for additional assistance. Q: Why does another wireless computer get faster speeds? A: This could be due to differences in the wireless adapters used, however if it is a big difference you may be experiencing a problem with the adapter. Try reinstalling the driver in device manager. Q: Are wireless USB adapters compatible with a Mac? A: Yes. The hardware should have no problem fitting and working with a Mac OS computer, however you may have to download the Mac version of the driver manually from the manufacturer website. Q: How are the USB adapters different from a PCI adapter? A: PCI adapters are designed to be placed inside a computer, however not all computers have a free motherboard slot for a PCI card. USB adapters are more flexible because most computers have a free USB port. © Vanilla Foundation Theme 2022 Powered By Vanilla Community Article How to change the Wireless Channel on a Tenda Router - Micro Center Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker {$smarty.capture.menu} Activity Categories Discussions Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker How to change the Wireless Channel on a Tenda Router - Micro Center This article describes how to change the wireless channel on a Tenda router. 1. There is no USB port on the M5 and I do not have a desktop or laptop that stays in one place to connect it to. Could I plug a separate router that has a USB port into one of the beacons with a network cable and use that to connect the hard drive without causing any issues with the network? I still have the Tenda AC15 that I replaced with the Deco units laying around. Any other ideas that may work? 0 · Share on TwitterShare on Facebook Comments TSMikeW admin July 2020 There are a couple of ways to address this. First you can buy an NAS adapter, and you'll just connect the external to via USB and the adapter to your router via ethernet. We don't stock these currently. Second option is to buy an NAS enclosure. You can remove the drive and install it in the new enclosure. Becareful with the drive and check the specifications. Some drives, like the WD MyBook's use an encryption chip on the PCB inside the enclosure. You won't be able to access the data on the drive without having that part inline.  Third option is to connect it to a computer, preferably a desktop connected directly to the router. Then you'll just share the drive from there. It's just a basic workgroup setup from that point. Fourth option, reinstall the Tenda AC15. You can connect the external to it via the USB 3.0 port. Then use your Deco's behind the Tenda as access points to further expand your network. The first thing to try is to reboot your router/modem to make sure they aren't causing the issue. A simple reboot could fix the problem within a minute. If your computer is plugged directly into your router with an Ethernet cable, make sure the wire is securely in the back of your computer and router/modem. You can also try another port on the back of your router.  If you are getting an invalid password message when trying to connect to your Wi-Fi, remember that wireless passwords are case sensitive. You can typically find default passwords and SSIDs (network names) written on a label on the router. If you try that and the password is still incorrect and you are not sure what it is, contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance with retrieving your wireless password. If those quick tips don't help, there are a variety of methods to try to get the Mac back online: 1.     Check your other devices that are connecting to the same network. If other devices are experiencing issues or not connecting either, contact your Internet Service Provider. 2.      Reboot the Mac first by opening the Apple menu and selecting Restart… from the menu. Do not reopen windows upon logging in. Try the connection again after restarting. 3.     Reset the DRAM/NVRAM. First, shut down the computer. Locate the Option, Command, R and P keys on your keyboard. Press the power button to turn the computer on, then immediately press and hold these four keys together until it boots back up. You can let go after about 20 seconds, during which you may see your Mac restart. 4.      Forget the network and reconnect to it. To do this: a. Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences. b. Click on Network.   c. Select Wi-Fi on the left and then select Advanced…   d. Select your Wi-Fi and then click on the minus sign below the list to remove it.  e. Close that window. Click the wireless icon on the top-right corner of the screen and then click your Wi-Fi network. If it has a lock icon, you will need to enter the network password. Type it in and click Join. 5.    Next, run Wireless Diagnostics. To do this: a. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on the Wireless Icon. Select Open Wireless Diagnostics… b. The Wireless Diagnostics window will open with the Introduction. Click Continue.  c. Wireless diagnostics will perform an initial scan of the network. If nothing is detected, you have the option to monitor the Wi-Fi connection.  d. Fill in additional information regarding your network. Press Continue.  e. Wireless Diagnostics will create a diagnostics report. This can take several minutes.  f. Once finished, it’ll give you a summary of the diagnostics that you can review. When you are finished, click on Done.  6.     If you're using Wi-Fi but your Mac has an ethernet port, try using an ethernet cable and plugging directly into your router instead. If the issues go away when using an ethernet cable, and none of the previous steps fixed your wireless issues, it is possible there are hardware issues with your wireless adapter. © Vanilla Foundation Theme 2022 Powered By Vanilla Community Article Router/Internet Modem Frequently Asked Questions - Micro Center Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker {$smarty.capture.menu} Activity Categories Discussions Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker Router/Internet Modem Frequently Asked Questions - Micro Center Here are some of the most commonly received router/modem related questions we receive at our Micro Center stores:  Q: What is a router? A: A router is a device that allows multiple devices to connect to the same internet connection offered by an internet service provider (ISP).   Q: Is that the device my provider gave me? A: No. The device offered by your provider is called a modem. However, some modems do offer the same features of a router and are called cable modem routers.   Q: Do I have to use what the ISP gave me? A: No. The ISP may have a list of devices that are compatible with their network, but you can purchase and use your own device. You want to make sure to get something that is compatible with your ISP.   Q: Do I need a router, or can I just use the modem? A: If you only have one or a handful of devices that connects to the internet, then you can use just the modem. Keep in mind that a lot of modems do not have wireless capabilities, so extra ethernet cables may be required.   Q: Do all routers include wireless? A: No, but the most common home routers do. Bigger companies may need a router without wireless for security purposes. Q: How can I protect my wireless network? A: Wireless networks can be protected by adding a security key or password. Other security features may be available such as MAC address filtering but information on this is usually provided in the manual.   Q: Which wireless security option do I choose? A: Many routers offer a few selections including WEP, WPA, and WPA2. The recommended option is the WPA2 standard. Encryption may be a separate field, these typically include either AES or TKIP, the best option in this case would be AES.   Q: Doesn’t a switch connect multiple devices as well? A: Yes. However, switches only provide a connection between the devices whereas routers manage the internet connection so each device can use it.   Q: Why does the router separate one port from the rest of them? A: The separate port is where the modem needs to be connected and is programed differently so the rest of the devices can access the internet. It is an input port whereas the other are output ports.   Q: How do I make the wireless signal from the router stronger? A: The strength of the wireless signal is determined by the interference in the area. Most routers allow you change the channel to one that has less interference from other networks in the area in the router configuration page.   Q: I changed the channel, but the signal isn’t strong enough to cover my entire building. What can be done? A: Another option would be to get a wireless extender as these devices can be added or bridged to routers to provide more coverage.   Q: What happens if I forget the password and cannot make changes to my router? A: Most routers have a button on the back with all the ports labeled. Look for the Reset button. If you hold this button for 30 seconds, the router will reset back to the default settings. You can then use the admin password to log into the router configuration page and make changes.   Q: What is WPS? A: WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup, which allows devices to communicate the wireless key without typing it in. When the button on the router is pressed once, and then pressed on another device, these two will talk to each other passing the information. It is an easier setup for connecting two wireless devices to each other.   Q: Can WPS be turned off? A: Yes, most routers will have an option on the wireless settings page.   Q: Does a router help protect my network? A: Yes. Most routers have a firewall to block traffic from entering your network unless the computer requests it.   Q: Can I allow traffic to access a program I am running? A: Yes. Routers can be configured with port forwarding to point traffic toward the computer that is running the program. If your ISP cable modem router does not have this option, reach out to your ISP to see what can be done. © Vanilla Foundation Theme 2022 Powered By Vanilla Community Article How to set up a Tenda N301 Wireless Router - Micro Center Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker {$smarty.capture.menu} Activity Categories Discussions Computers Computer Parts Custom PC Builder DIY/ Maker How to set up a Tenda N301 Wireless Router - Micro Center This article will show how to complete the basic setup of a Tenda N301 wireless router, including the physical connection and basic wireless setup. A simple reboot could fix the problem within a minute. If you are using Ethernet make sure your wire is securely in the back of your computer and router/modem. You can also try another port on the back of your router.  If you are getting an invalid password message when trying to connect wirelessly, remember that wireless passwords are case sensitive. You can typically find default passwords and SSIDs (network names) on the router as well. If the password is still incorrect and you are not sure what it is, you would want to contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. If those quick tips don't help, there are a variety of methods to try to get the Mac back online: 1.      Confirm other devices are connecting to the same network. If no other device is connecting, contact your internet service provider. 2.      Reboot the Mac first by opening the Apple menu and selecting Restart… from the menu. Do not reopen windows upon logging in. 3.      Reset the DRAM/NVRAM. Shut down the computer. Locate the Option, Command, R and P keys. As soon as you turn on the computer, hold these four keys down immediately after until it boots back up. 4.      Forget the network and reconnect to it. a. Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences.           b. Open Network.            c. Select the wireless network and then select Advanced…            d. Select the same wireless network and then click on the minus sign below the list to remove it.            e. Close out of the network windows and select the WiFi icon on the top right. Choose your               connection. If it has a lock icon, you will need to enter the network password.  5.      Run Wireless Diagnostics. a. Hold down the Option key and click on the Wireless Icon. Select Open Wireless Diagnostics…           b. The Wireless Diagnostics will open with the Introduction. Click Continue.            c. The wireless diagnostics will perform an initial scan of the network. If nothing is detected, you               have the option to monitor the Wi-Fi connection.            d. Fill in additional information regarding your network. Press Continue.            e. The Wireless Diagnostics will create a diagnostics report. This can take several minutes.            f. Once finished, it’ll give you a summary of the diagnostics that you can review. When you are              finished, click on Done.  6.      If your computer has an Ethernet port available and you are using wireless, use an Ethernet cable. If you have access to the internet again or seeing much improved performance, it is possibly hardware issues with your wireless adapter and service may need to be looked into.
