Combination of a workstation/gaming rig, with the secondary PC for some additional gaming for my youngest daughter, streaming, etc. Still need to get a GPU for that 2nd system, however. First PC builld/upgrade in about 12 years. Pulled out all the stops, burned an incredible hole in my wallet in the process. Still have to fine-tune the RGB (and get the appropriate cables for the Lian Li GPU strimer to work correctly). Getting there, however. Top monitors help manage a separate media server.

  Started this build to replace an aging console style itx build. That build had cooked and killed several motherboards and... Started this build to replace an aging console style itx build. That build had cooked and killed several motherboards and CPUs when it used a 6700k and stock intel cooler, so I had upgraded to a better low profile cooler and downgraded to a i5-7500. But I really felt the i5 was massively limiting me whenever I did anything serious, like transcoding media, so I started looking for upgrades in late 2019. For Black Friday 2019, I found a truly amazing deal on a Ryzen 2700x 8 core processor and an x570 motherboard at microCenter, so picked up a cheap case and decent PSU + ram deals to slap something together. I kept my 980ti and 2tb intel 660p drive, then sold the old itx build without a GPU for almost as much as I paid for the new parts! Over time I ended up using the 660p in a revived 2009 MacPro and swapping in a new 1TB western digital black drive. I also added a few extra case fans at some point. In early 2020 I tried out a 5700 and 5700xt gpu but returned both as even at ~$350 for the 5700xt it wasn’t a meaningful upgrade to the 980ti. In September 2020 I was afraid my 980ti was about to lose alll value and was hoping to upgrade to an upcoming rx6000 series card eventually, so I sold the 980ti and moved a vega56 into this build from the macPro. As shortages started to take hold, I snagged one of the last reasonably priced 5500xt 8gb cards from Dell.com for the macPro and kept those for a while. In December 2020 I snagged a launch day 3060ti at MSRP from microCenter, but after a month or so with it, wasn’t wowed by it and was able to sell it used for a lot more than I paid new, so returned to the Vega56. By April 2021 I found a way underpriced itx build with 3600x and 8gb rx580, and was able to sell the mobo/cpu/ram for more than the complete unit. I also sold the RX580 and 5500xt for a huge profit, and slapped a cheap old rx460 in the macPro (at this point I was using my MicroCenter purchased m1 Mac mini for most desktop mac tasks anyway). Finally, I got a sweet deal on a 1080ti from a member of a car forum I was on and sold my vega56 for 3 times what I had paid for it a year earlier. The final upgrade for the time being was snagging a 5900x to replace the 2700x. I didn’t really “need” the cpu upgrade, but the 2700x was always a placeholder in the x570 board I had, and I noticed that I could sell a chip I paid $129+$30 mobo discount for for like $150, so I took the plunge as soon as my spot on an online waitlist for the 5900x opened up. Kept my stock wraith prism cooler which is adequate but not spectacular. The future move will be a GPU, but I’m not upgrading from my 1080ti until a 16GB+, 80ti or 800xt branded card is available new for under $700 again, so it could be a long wait! I use this build to occasionally play old games and sometimes transcode media. It gets a couple hours a week of use, often doing silly things like still playing Company of Heroes or other 15+ year old games. But when I do have a chance to fire up something newer, having serious horsepower on tap helps me use my 4k monitors to their fullest potential! This build uses a lot of power compared to my M1 Max MacBook Pro, but there are a few tasks it is truly faster at, (especially since handbrake hardware encoding is flat broken on the M1 Max, it’s was slower than even a 7core M1 chip!) so I do fire it up when I need to do those tasks.
