I initially planned to upgrade an old HP Compaq for gaming and to use graphic design software. I intend to play Overwatch,... I initially planned to upgrade an old HP Compaq for gaming and to use graphic design software. I intend to play Overwatch, Halo, Kingdom Hearts, Splitgate and more. For graphic art I'm mainly interested in digitizing embroidery files and want to make stickers and pins. After getting some help, I realized it would probably be better to build from scratch. I would have loved to keep my original case since I painted it pink and cut out a Jigglypuff silhouette but the CPU cooler and graphics card were too wide to fit. I do like the sleeker look of the new case but in hindsight I should have waited until I had the parts before customizing the case. I did go back to the store a week after building the PC to get more RAM more for cosmetic reasons than needing an extra 16gb. It took about 5 hours to build because I would rearrange how the things were and connecting the rgb cables was a bit confusing. Cable management wasn't too difficult but involved a lot of reworking how I initially connected everything. Next time I'll work on Cable management as I'm building. In general, I should have done more research before starting the build process because it would not turn on when I had finished. I realized one of the power cables was not fully plugged in after checking the cables for everything else first. In the end, it was a fun project and I inspired my boyfriend to want to build a gaming PC for himself.$2,003.91 -

Upgraded from an i7-8700k, msi gaming pro carbon z390 motherboard and msi gtx 1070ti oc. Built for games like Sea of Thieves, Assassin's Creed Valhalla/Odyssey and Modern Warfare to name a few. Cpu overclocked to 5.1ghz while GPU is running on stock speeds. Perfect for what I was aiming for. Playing on Msi gaming monitor 1ms response time 1440p at 165hz refresh rate. This is my second build I've done so far and though I'm no expert, I'm definitely digging it so far.$1,815.91 -

This is one of the main reasons The Kraken was built. I wanted to have a quick home PC that would able to handle major video edits for our daughter and family growing up. I also enjoy playing games from time to time and if you aren't on max settings, well you aren't playing it right! It should be good at doing all kinds of work without being too specific in a job. Tasks that will handle the most are graphical applications, coding, VM, 3D modeling and very little rendering (4 to 5 applications open and working together all the time is a must). I also use all the major OS’s and it needs to be versatily in that front. Currently not playing games but could always do in the future. ———— Applications that I use on a daily basis are: - Video editing (DaVinci, HitFilm) - Affinity (Photo, Designer) - Nuke/Fusion/Natron (motion graphics, compositing and VFX ) - Substance Allegorithmic softwares (3D materials) - Occasionally 3D modeling. - Occasionally software development with virtual machines for code testing on multiple platforms. ———— - Video editing wise I am able to handle 1080p like nothing. Currently don't need to do 4k videos (I might in the future) but I am pretty sure it should’t be a problem at all. When exporting things are a bit different and it depends on the timeline, how many layers, effects and so on. More cores would be better, but so far it has been a breeze. I was able to move from 5 layers at 720p to a 5 layer at 1080p and don’t even feel the weight. —— - Graphic design wise I have plenty of headroom for my current workflow. Layered based applications tend to prefer single core speed and the 10900k is spot on. Some project have couple of hunders of layers or are .exr 32 bit multi render passes and it doesn’t even blink. I am sure the GPU will bottleneck at some point but so far no problem. —— - 3D wise It would say its definitely not the best as the GPU is not quite there in terms of performance. It does not really suffer much in Real Time Rendering applications but on some heavy GPU compute tasks it just takes quite a bit and can be easly outperfomed by the CPU. NVIDIA cards would have an upper hand in the majority of cases. Modeling on the other hand, since is mostly done in the viewport without shading, because is handled mostly by the CPU, no problem there. —— In retrospec things I would have done differently/better are: - Check the measurements! (Case - GPU length) and (CPU cooler - Motherboard) are probably the more important. They made me change things a couple of times and lost days. - 64 RAM is a bit much. I am constantly around 15/20GB mark and I thought the more the better but so far I haven’t come even close to the 32GB. I would have probably waited a bit more before buying another stick and use that money for other components. The day that you reach 32GB constantly and its slowing down your work, then go for it. - Graphics card: I would have preferred a NVIDIA card for drivers compatibility. - 970 Evo Pro/Plus m.2 ssd's are insanely fast, so much so that I think that going 1k W/R below what I have right now (3k W/R) would not make much difference but it would save you some money for other stuff. —— Upgrade for the future - Finish the fan setup. - Waiting for the next gen graphics cards. Hoping for RDNA 2 to ramp up the competition and have more support integration. - Having an extra ssd for archive is never a bad choice. - Motherboard has only 1 usb 3 gen.1, but case has 2 so might need a PCIE usb header. - Also motherboard has 2 usb 2 and would like to expand that.$2,887.74 -

However I wanted and all around PC that I could do pretty much anything on. I have always bought the standard prebuilt machines over the years and wanted something to call my own not HP or Dell HAHA. It was a little overwhelming at first but the associates at Microcenter pointed me in the right direction for everything and asked really good questions. Very Helpful. But I'm extremely happy with the perfomance and products I chose. Now looking forward to the next build and upgrades. LOL$2,225.88 -

I got into PC gaming back in my freshman year of college in 2017. For the longest time, I was playing games like Fortnite... I got into PC gaming back in my freshman year of college in 2017. For the longest time, I was playing games like Fortnite and Minecraft on my 2016 13" MacBook Pro, dual-booted with Windows 10. However, gaming performance was subpar with this; I wanted to be able to enjoy games graphically but also wanted something portable since I was moving between my dorm room and my home a lot. About a year later, in August 2018, I bought an eGPU with a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580. This was definitely a step up but it was a pain to maintain and keep operational, as Windows 10 updates constantly broke it and caused error 12. Shortly after buying my eGPU, I began doing research on building my own PC and saving up. I did research off and on for a couple years and then, this past spring after COVID hit and quarantine started, I finally decided to pull the trigger and build my own PC. I did a bunch of research on what the best parts were and how to actually build my computer. After I had my list of parts nailed down, I started watching prices. I saw my local Micro Center had only one Sapphire Nitro+ RX 5700 XT Special Edition in stock, so I went ahead and ordered it for pickup. I got to Micro Center and decided to look around for a bit, as it was my first time being in one. While I was there, I decided I might as well pick up my case too. However, an employee asked me if I needed any help. Long story short, I walked out of Micro Center that day with everything I needed to build my PC (whoops). Later that night, I began building my PC. It went fairly well, but I did struggle with getting the motherboard into the case. Being a first time builder, I attached the Z63 pump to the CPU right away-- that meant that I had to somehow get the motherboard in while also holding the radiator and not putting too much stress on the pump. I didn't want to take off the pump, as I feared messing up the pre-applied thermal paste. I was finally able to get the motherboard in and the rest of my build was pretty easy. Shortly after I completed the build, one of the lights went out in one of the fans on my RX 5700 XT. I took it back to Micro Center to replace, but they did not have the same one in stock, so I just decided to use my RX 580 from my eGPU and save up for when AMD releases new GPUs. The PC performs great and playing games on it is a blast. The white NZXT case is simple and pleasing to look at. I'm extremely pleased with my choice of parts. I mostly use the PC for gaming, playing anything from PVP games like Fortnite or Warzone, to other games like No Man's Sky or Satisfactory. I am able to run everything on high-ultra settings and get 60+ FPS. I would love to be able to get more frames, but my monitor is only a 60Hz monitor, so I am not too concerned about that right now. Next to upgrade will be the monitor and then the GPU. I'm hoping to find a nice 1440p 144Hz monitor during Black Friday or Amazon Prime Day. I am hoping to stick with AMD for my next GPU, but would also love to get a GPU capable of ray-tracing. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments!$1,539.92
