I wanted to build something that I could race, game, run Plex server, and watch 4K movies on with true HDR. All-in-one, and one-for-all; not separate devices! I built it and the gaming part was great, but the 4k Blu-ray part was only so-so : ( And then I moved on to a 3080 12GB ITX build and a second-hand XBox One S, because two purpose built things are always better than an all-in-one thing! Learn from my learning experience : ) Some of the part choices were forced, because the last CPU that supports Blu-ray disc playback is the Intel 10th Gen. I would have loved to go for an 11400 at the time (12th gen wasn't out yet, though I would have gotten the 12600K had I known a used XBox was such a better BD player), but a 10700K was my choice. Fitting it into the Silverstone Grandia 09 case was a challenge, especially for CPU cooling. I wanted something that could cool better than a low-profile Noctua, so I shoved a 120mm Arctic Freezer radiator in there. Also a learning experience; 120mm rads are not all that much better than air cooling -_- And although I did not need to, one foresight was to get an EVGA SFX-size power supply, as that made fitting power cables near the radiator MUCH easier.$1,560.89 -

I wanted to design and build a full open case with thick double 1/2 acrylic sheets having the ability to access all the components easily. Also have all the radiator RGB lighting show through the acrylic while protecting the fans and moving parts. Polished hex bolts secure the frame. The Corsair SF750 mini PSU was perfect for this build a I needed a super small PSU to both accomodate the GPU requirements as well as hide in the back with the wiring minimal. The GPU is supported on the bottom with a custom 3D printed frame that acts as both a case stand where the acrylic locks in as well as the horizontal mount for the GPU and eliminates all GPU sag.$1,181.91 -

When flying back to Massachusetts, I didn't have a PC to game on, and I just felt with the new generation of parts, it was time to build a new one. So, I took the leap and decided to start compiling a new, upgraded rig for when I would fly home! The main components are an i7-10700k and a MSi Gaming X Trio 3070 at the heart of the project. I was lucky enough to get a 3070 through notification at around 3 in the morning. Thus, my 2020 "away" build was born and has been a delight to game on since!$3,201.94 -

This was my first small form factor (SFF) ITX motherboard build after many years of experience with ATX computers. It was a joy to build in this Sliger SM570 case. But overall not cheap even buying used and open box. Cable management wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be (watch Youtube video and use use zip ties). Patience is required to go back and optimize cable pathways. PC Partpicker was not accurate in showing if a motherboard would fit with the NZXT (specifically the Gigabyte Vision Z590i was NOT compatible unless you were willing to only use 1 of 2 DDR memory slots). The Nvidia 3080 FE is not optimal for this sandwich style SFF case because the GPU uses a pass through cooling system that is blocked by the PSU and riser cable, but temperatures have been comparable to the prior ATX build it was in.$2,029.94 -

I play FPS games like CSGO and Warzone alongside RPG games like Far Cry, Witcher, and others. In the future, I plan to upgrade my GPU to a 3070 or even 3080 if the opportunity presents itself. That's probably the thing I would've done differently in hindsight. I had an opportunity to buy a 3070 at Microcenter and I passed it up because I thought I didn't need the upgrade but now I wish I hadn't. I'd love to pick up some real rgb fans (not just purple ones, even if that fits my theme), or just more fans in general as, even without my psu in my case, it still gets pretty toasty in there. My PC was built mainly for gaming, but I also use it for VR, video editing, and graphic design later as well once I start college in the spring. For VR, I currently use the Quest 2 with a link cable, but will transition over to a Valve Index once everything comes in. For games, I'm currently playing League of Legends, Valorant, Genshin Impact, Escape from Tarkov, Ready or Not, Dead by Daylight, Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 2042, and more. The build started with the 3080Ti FE that I managed to buy for MSRP off of Best Buy. After I realized my PSU (750w) and CPU (i5-8400) wouldn't be able to keep up with the new GPU, I upgraded component by component until the only parts that I took from my previous PC were the storage and ram. Personally, I don't like the look of RGB, and find it tacky and distracting, so I opted to go for black and other muted colors that would keep the build sleek and clean. Thank you for reading and feel free to leave comments and criticisms! I'd still call myself an amateur in the world of PC building.$2,517.89 -

It's mainly meant for gaming and general desktop usage and it's been able to conquer that all while the temps are still pretty cool for such a compact space. I definitely sacrificed some USB ports and some other IO (PCIe slots), but I think it was pretty worthwhile knowing it's much more portable than the H700 I used to have.
