I needed a new desktop to use for music production and occasionally play video games. I travel from college to home and so finding a small case was one of my priorities. I use FL Studio and various virtual instruments, which require high computing power and some RAM. For video games, I sometimes play Valorant and CSGO. My PC journey began when I watched an LTT video on upgrading an old Dell Optiplex into a "gaming" PC. I knew jack about PCs but I always wanted to build one myself. The Optiplex I bought had an i7-3700 (an LGA 1155 socket and it was hard to find a compatible motherboard) but it was a slim case and was completely different than what I thought I learned. I was determined to make it work and like everyone, had to learn what was compatible. Over a course of months, I procured all the parts from eBay, Amazon, FB marketplace, etc. Connecting cables to the tiny motherboard pins suck and I'll always hate it. The joy I felt when my beloved Frankenstein PC booted up and worked perfectly, to say the least. No more laptop, I was a PC gamer and I could finally play games like Doom, DMC 5, and Tekken 7 at 60 FPS (feelsgoodman). The new PC is bought with my big boi monies, over months with hella deals and savings (thx microcenter) and other websites. My PC may not be as RGB, white, bougie, or flexing as some other builds but I'm digging the gamer green that matches with the jade Shenron I bought. There's more stuff but the build parts list is kinda jank and I don't want to bother with it.$1,636.94 -

I've been using the same laptop for both gaming and work for the past five years, but it was time to retire it and upgrade to a desktop PC. Since it was my first time building a PC, I wanted something I'd love! Spent a few weeks doing research and finally put this list together. As soon as I had enough money in hand to build a PC, I waited no further to say good bye to my old gaming console. I know the graphic card market now is in a much better shape but I couldn't wait longer and I seriously though the chip shortage is gonna stay till 2022 end. At the time of building this PC, AMD RX 6600 is the only card that is budget friendly and readily available in market. I am not a huge fan of RGB and it doesn't add anything to performance. I don't want to waste money on that. I stayed with the stock cooler that came with Ryzen 5600G and added 2 120mm exhaust fans. I stick with 5600G rather than 5600X to keep the PC running even when the graphic card die and I can't afford another one. True future proofing :) I saw a slim gap in the price for 3200MHz and 3600MHz ram and went with 3600. AMD can take advantage of the high speed ram than Intel. Micro ATX form factor and Thermal take S100 are both budget friendly choices. I am happy with the way it looks and performs. I am set for next 5 years.$1,230.94 -

An aesthetic-focused mid range gaming rig with room to grow and upgrade, designed for my wife. Definitely not winning any awards for the price-to-performance ratio, but I intentionally specced around some components (like the white, way more wattage than needed power supply and 32 GB of RGB RAM) based around looks and not needing to be upgraded later, with other components (like the RX 6600) being obvious targets for future upgrades. If anyone wanted to emulate this build while still going somewhat aesthetically pleasing, I'd go with the black version of the case, no RGB RAM (and also only 16 GB), get a single normal fan for rear exhaust instead of the RGB 3 pack, different power supply, no wifi card (if you don't need it, we did), and just use the stock heat sink for the 5600. With those changes, this would be a killer bang-for-buck build. As it is, I fully accept the higher cost in exchange for better looks and great accessories.$1,223.86 -

The motherboard stopped working. Initial intention was to upgrade to AMD 4 which had both good specs and prices. However, AMD 5 was on the horizon and I decided to wait and build to that spec to provide a longer life for the motherboard. I selected AMD as my builds for my wife use Intel and thus I could compare prices, specs, features, etc. The AMD 3 computer was quite efficient and more than sufficient for my foci on writing, from essays to books, and basic graphics. I often had multiple programs open as writing required accessing sources, looking at uses of the sources and my music to work by, ideally running simultaneously. The graphics programs were used for cleaning up old family photos, films and other materials such as newspapers. As I am not professionally into photo and video technology, I use basic software such as that from Cyberlink. The family pictures date to the turn of the 20th century and by the late 1930’s included old Kodak family films. I then sent the processed files to third parties to be placed on DVD’s which were distributed to family. For my AMD 5, all components were purchased locally, all but one M2 at Microcenter as I want to keep such local sources viable. I selected the Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite motherboard, The retail cost was under $300, had the latest chipset and could be bundled with both other hardware and software. I was particularly interested in using M2 storage and the motherboard had three slots for it, one tied directly to the CPU and two PCle 4.0 slots. For memory I purchased a one TB M2 2280 for the CPU slot on which I put Windows 11 and a second partition for downloaded software that I installed in the C: partition. For data files I selected a 2 TB mvme which was a later purchase from Best Buy. The latter was on special sale, almost 50% off. On this device I created three partitions for storing documents, music and pictures/videos. I had planned on using my existing 3 TB HDD but it too had stopped working. I hope to recover the data from it. The slots for the M2 storage are under a heat sink located next to the PCle 16 slot. Thus the M2 devices did not need any heat sinks. The slots are partially under my PowerColor RX 6600 graphics card with 8 GB of memory. I am not a gamer so don’t need the most recent graphics chips but did want a decent card with sufficient memory for a future 32 inch monitor. I purchased a Ryzen 7 7700X CPU that was bundled with 32 GB of GSkill memory. I selected the Noctua UH-14S cooler. The cooler is a large passive heat sink nearly six inches high and three inches wide. It comes with an attached fan but a second fan can be attached to the other side. I installed only one fan. I used existing hardware for the rest of the build. All was installed in my Antec server mid-tower case that has room for the cooler. The case has temperature controlled fans, one on the top back of the case and two on the top of the case. I reused my Antec 1000 watt platinum modular PSU along with my LG internal Blu-ray read/write drive. I have a 27 inch ASUS monitor and connected it via HDMI. After more than a month of using the new build, it runs fast and cool. The CPU cooler fan is almost noiseless and the case fans have not been turned on as the operating temperature is low. Booting takes less than 15 seconds and shutting down is about 5 seconds. The build was under $1,500 including tax. I look forward to increased efficiency and pleasure in my computing.$1,084.94 -
