Many of your computers most critical parts are held in place by tiny fasteners like screws, standoffs, and washers. From the motherboard and PC case to the hard drive, power supply, and case fan, nearly all of your PCs most critical parts require screws for proper mounting.

Of course, these components almost always come with all the mounting screws you need when you buy them new. But what if you have lost some screws for your old motherboard that you want to use in a new PC build, or you have bought a used SSD that came without its mounting hardware? Perhaps you even opened up your new computer case and then immediately lost the screws that came with it. It has happened to many of us.

Micro Center’s screw kits help ensure you have always got the right screws on hand. From computer case screws to motherboard screws, we provide high quality screws in common thread sizes, at cost effective prices. Stop in one of our nationwide locations and see what we have to offer.

Who Needs Computer Screws and Standoffs?

First, anyone who makes a living as a PC builder or repair technician will definitely need a computer screw kit on deck. Even if you only plan to do DIY repairs on your own PCs, a basic screw assortment kit is a convenient way to reduce your trips to the hardware store.

The average casual desktop PC builder will typically be fine using the included fasteners that came with their PC parts. However, keeping extra screws around helps ensure you never have to fear a lost screw, and it can come in handy when you are installing or upgrading parts in the future.

Which Kind of PC Screws and Fasteners Do I Need?

Fortunately, whether your components are made by ASUS, Dell, Gigabyte, or any other PC computer manufacturer, the vast majority of fasteners used in PC building fall into one of a handful of categories:

#6-32 UNC Screws: The most common type of screw, used to mount power supplies and all kinds of larger and more robust hardware. Available in a wide variety of lengths and drive styles, sometimes even as a thumb screw designed to be removed by hand.

M3 Screws: A slightly smaller type of screw with finer threads, typically used for mounting more delicate components like the motherboard, and also available in a variety of lengths.

Motherboard Standoffs: Metal parts that hold the motherboard in place and prevent it from touching the PC case which can short out the board. Standoffs require attachment with screws, so make sure to check the specs on your standoffs and verify which type of screws they require.
