KVM: Attaching multiple computers to one monitor
by kp

KVM ConnectionsTo connect two or more computers to a monitor, use a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch that can integrate multiple devices to the same computer. These switches are available in many varieties with several different cable combinations. The first step is to check what type of ports your system and monitor has. Most video ports are a standard 15-pin (female) VGA connection as shown in the diagram. Next, determine what type of ports your keyboard and mouse use. These devices are usually PS/2 or USB. Depending on the KVM switch type, there may be additional connections for audio and/ or microphone. For help in selecting the right KVM switch, try Understanding Tech Cable Reference or Belkin's KVM cable wizard. To change between systems, KVM switches have either a manual switch, a software switch or both. Manufacturer specifications may vary, so read your owner's manual for more information.
