If you've got an Apple iBook or PowerBook with an AirPort card, all you have to do to join a wireless network is go to your AirPort menu and select the SSID (or name of the network) that you want to join.

If the network is encrypted, simply enter the password when prompted, and you're ready to go.

If the network doesn't show up in the list, it probably isn't broadcasting its SSID. To join, simply select Other... under the AirPort menu, and enter the SSID and password if required.
