Short for Personal Video Recorder. It is like recording television with a VCR, but it records in digital format. Stand-alone units have been out for some time, and now, it is one of the main features built into Media Center PCs.

A combination of hardware and software allows you to enjoy your favorite TV programs right on your computer. With PVR functionality, you can playback, fast forward, rewind and pause. Plus, you can jump to any part of a recorded program without any delay. With programs recorded onto your hard drive, you can burn your favorites onto DVD and watch on a computer or in a standard DVD player

A PVR is also referred to as a hard disk recorder (HDR), digital video recorder (DVR), personal video station (PVS), or a personal TV receiver (PTR).
